Annaclone Handicap Road Race 1st March 2003

That magic blend of youth and experience ensured a 1 -2 for Peter Hawkins and Brendan Graham at the opening race of the season at Annaclone.

Promoted by Banbridge CC and sponsored by Travers Engineering of Rathfriland, the 40 mile handicapped event attracted 76 riders who were despatched in three groups with a total handicap of six minutes.

Veteran Graham (Total Cycling) realising the dangers of the fast closing 2nd Cat bunch, initiated the winning move when he left the limit group accompanied by Castlereagh junior Hawkins and Omagh Wheelers veteran Micky Gallen.

A similar move in the 2nd cat bunch saw Phoenix new signing Matthew Ward, Ben Morrow (Audi - East Antrim) and Ards CC's Eddie Smyth set off in pursuit.

The 34 seconds gap in at the bell proved sufficient and the leading trio crossed the line 14 seconds ahead of the chasers.
