Gribbon Takes First Major Win of Season

aThe Audi GP promoted by East Antrim Audi was run in very favourable conditions – dry, warm a with a light tailwind which was an advantage on the drag at Newline. The race catered for A1 to A3 riders. Racing was aggressive with a break developing early on. This included Paul Stenson (East Antrim), Aaron Swann (Ballymoney CC), Curtis Gilmore (Team Madigan and North Down duo James Ambrose and Keith Philips among others. They were then joined by Glenn Kinning (Kinning Cycles) and Ali Gribbon (Carn Wheelers) in the fourth lap.

With hard chasing by the main peloton the break never got much more than a thirty second lead and it looked as if it would eventually come down to a bunch sprint. However the leaders held on to their slim advantage for m0st of the race. Then Kinning, Gribbon and Swann jumped from the group and rode hard to gain time on both the original group and the chasers. The remainder of the leaders were then swallowed up by the peloton.

Gribbon who has been showing excellent form of late took his chance on the finishing straight and made for the line to take his first major victory of the year.

Swann was next across the line with Kinning in third. The bunch gallop for the line saw North Down’s Keith Philips edge out Gary Donaldson of Omagh and Jason Henry (U/A).

Once again East Antrim promoted a very well run event with lots of marshalls around the course. There was the usual excellent refreshments served in the hall afterwards and it was much appreciated. Thanks also to the first aiders and to the commissaire on the day.
