Kinning Showed His Crit Expertise at Newry

Last night Newry Wheelers promoted their annual crit around the streets of Newry City. The weather was perfect for the night and the good crowds enjoyed the high quality racing. Newry wheelers ran a full programme of events and first of were the youth races with the under 12's first.

Adam McGeever of  AAA didnt waste anytime attacking out of the blocks and took a solo win ahead of Quillan Donnelly of Bikeworx with Maria McAllister in 3rd from Island wheelers.

The under 14 event saw another dominant display this time from Ryan Gereghty of Bikeworx with Odhran Doogan (Errigal CC) taking the sprint for 2nd and Chris Donald 3rd from Team Madiagn.

The under 16 race was very evenly matched and although all the riders gave it a good go it was a sprint that decided the outcome with Shay Donley of Ballymoney taking the verdict ahead of PJ Doogan of Errigal and Conor McKeown from Cuchulainn.

The Wheelers then promoted a club race as the supporting event which had a small handicap applied. Sean Mc Avoy made the most of this and latched onto the back of the main bunch when couldn't be shaked he took the win ahead of Conor Quinn and Sean Shorty McAvoy.

The main event of the evening, the A1/2/3 rac,  saw some of Ulsters top crit riders take to the line. Glenn Kinning (Kinning Cycles) and Gareth McKee (Banbridge CC) didnt take their time and straight out of the blocks they establised a lead that would see them lap the field. Mark Mc Kinley and Gareth McCulllough rode well for the local club and Jake Gray (NRPT), John Buller (Banbridge CC) and Craig Rea  (Phoenix CC) were never far off the action.

McKee struck out with 3 laps to go and looked like he had Kinning on the ropes but Kinning never gave in and chased McKee right to the line and pipped him at the finish. In the sprint for third John Buller showed he has a great kick taking the verdict ahead of Gary Donaldson (Omagh Wheelers) and Mark Mc Kinley who couldn't be spilt on the finish line camera.

So in all it was a great nigh'ts racing and a great way to show off the sport of cycling.Fast action in and out of corners and spectaors seeing plenty of racing.

Newry Wheelers would like to thank all the club members on the night who helped out, Haldane Fisher, Cloughmor Extreme, the PSNI for their assiastance and Newry Mourne and Down District Council.
