Phoenix Make it 1, 2 at Armagh Crit

aIt was a good night for Phoenix riders at the Orchard Shelbourne CC promoted Armagh City Criterium this evening. The race was run over a 3km circuit starting at the East side of the Mall. There was a large field for this A4 only criterium and it was obvious that there was enthusiasm for this type of racing.

The riders were completing each lap in just under four minutes although this time grew less as the race neared conclusion. While there there were no real break aways a number of riders were noticed for their aggressive riding at the front of the bunch.

Among these were Ian Weir of TVR, Sean Scullion (Island Wheelers), Ivor Hession, Luke Ireland and Alan Roper of Phoenix CC. Lester Fiddes of the promoting club was also making a comeback to racing and it was obvious he had lost none of his craft and was always up near the front watching for moves.

The crit incorporated two primes at 30 minutes and 40 minutes. Both of these were taken by Luke Ireland with Ivor Hession (Phoenix CC) and Ian Weir (TVR) taking second and third in the first one and Niall Morrison of Phoenix and Andrew McCullough of Killinchy doing so in the second prime.

Coming to the line Ireland broke free of the bunch to take a clear win.

Alan Roper (Phoenix CC) and Sean Scullion did the same to take second and third.

This filled the points situation but Orchard CC had prizes for the sprints and for the top six. Ian Weir (TVR), took the bunch sprint for fourth with Lester Fiddes putting in a superb effort to take fifth from Ivor Hession (Phoenix CC).

Some of the Belfast based Glendale club had bad luck with punctures and mechanicals but were still able to smile about it afterwards.

Orchard CC promoted a very good race and hope to make it even safer for next year. Many locals clubs such as Square Wheels and Island Wheelers took their club runs out to Armagh to enjoy the race and it is good to see neighbouring clubs coming out to support each other.

With lots of cameras organised the club were very quickly able to identify the winners. Many thanks to all the marshalls who turned out to help.

Depite the fact that the race was based in a street situation the club were still able to supply hospitality and facilities. The had two portable toilets at sign-on and a marquee. They fired up a generator and made sure everyone had lots of tea and sandwiches at the end of the race. Well done on their resourcefulness.

Many thanks also to the ambulance crew whose services were not required thankfully. Thank also to the PSNI who had a car on patrol stopping traffic and a motorbike outrider who acted as lead for the race. Their services were very much appreciated.

Thanks to the comms on the night Mark Lamb and Tommy McCague.
