Mark Does It Again

Mark Greer (Maryland Wheelers) scored the biggest win of his career to date when he soloed home to win the prestigious Biznet Solutions Tour of the Ards today. The 36-year-old Lisburn rider was part of a 7-strong break which escaped the main field of 70 riders approaching Portaferry after some 30 miles of racing.

This group built up a lead of one minute but when Greer heard that a number of riders were bridging the gap he attacked on his own at Kircubbin with 7 miles remaining to the finish at Newtownards.
" Jim Lavery passed me on the motorbike and shouted, 'You've seven miles to go and are 30 seconds up' So I thought - why not? I gave it every thing I had and in the end it paid off. I'm delighted."

Greer, a stage winner in last week’s Tour of the North, time trialled along the coast road and managed to hold off the chasers with young Martyn Irvine of the promoting club Ards CC finishing second just 35 seconds down.
Roe Valley’s Brendan O’Brien won the 3-up sprint for third place ahead of Jim McConnell (Audi-East Antrim) and last year’s victor Tommy Evans (Planet X).

Paul Mulligan (Crannog Ireland), Andrew McCullough (XMTB) and Fraser Duncan (Northern-Dave Kane) completed the top eight. Andrew is another young rider to look out for in the future. At just 17 years of age, he came third in the Gorey three day last week and stayed with break today.
