Way to Go Martyn -Congratulations

Martyn Irvine from Newtownards made history today when he became the first ever Irish cylist to qualify for a place in the track cycling for theĀ  Olympic Games.

Martyn finished seventh in the Omnium today in Melbourne, Australia in the track World Championships. Irvine rode consistently over the two days in the six event Omnium with his five top ten finishes ensuring that he finished well up overall.

With Caroline Ryan's bronze medal yesterday and the recent success of the Irish paralympic track squad, Ireland has had amazing success on the track for a nation that does not have its own velodrome.

Martyn will now return to Europe and compete in some road events as well as prepare himself mentally and physically for the Olympic Games in London.

On behalf of everyone in Ulster we wish Martyn continued success. We would also like to thank all the Irish riders who have given us so much pleasure with their success on a world wide stage. Long may it continue.

Marian Lamb
