Swinand Takes Laurels in Vets Championships

Almost 100 riders took to the roads around Scotstown and Tydavnet on Saturday afternoon when the National Veteran's Championships took place promoted by Emyvale CC. With eight laps of a tough, rolly circuit it was never going to be an easy race.

Within the first half hour of racing a break formed and began to pull away from the bunch. This group consisted of Chris Coyle (Castlebar CC), Gerry McCabe (Cuchulainn CC), Peter McConville (Newry Wheeleer) and Darren Weir (Team Vision Racing). As they moved clear they were soon joined by other leading riders.

This was always going to be a break worth watching as it now contained last year's champion Dave Peelo (Murphy Surveyors Kilcullen), renowned hard man of Irish racing, Rory Wyley (Carrick Wheelers) and other top hitters such as Brendan McGloughlin (Blarney CC), John Madden (Curran Racing), Joe Fenlon (The Edge) and Greg Swinand (Usher IRC).

Unusually for him Martin O’Loughlin (Carrick Wheelers) missed the break and began to give chase and was joined by Paul Mulligan (Eurocycles), Tom Shanahan (Limerick CC) and Mark Kiernan (Murphey Surveyors Kilcullen).

This set the tone for the remainder of the race with the lead group keeping their distance on the chasers and the fast paced peloton. McConville was dropped from the break after several laps and tried to stay with the chase group led by O'Loughlin.

Peelo had a puncture during lap five and had to chase hard to get back on. He then powered on through the break in the last lap gaining a minute on his chasers. He soloed home to victory, a very delighted man. Joe Fenlon of th eEdge took silver with Peelo having to settle for bronze on this occasion. Usher took the team prize with Colm Bracken, Paul Dolan and Swinand collecting the medals.

It was a great race and we were delight to see Darren Weir who has shown such promise recently, take fifth place overall with John Madden of Curran Racing coming in next. Well done to all.
