Irwin Breaks National Record at Woodgreen

Just days after the Board of Cycling Ireland approved new standards for handcycling time trial records, Darrell Irwin set his own standard to beat. Irwin (Ulster Handcycling Association) is H2 category cyclist and the standard set for this category was 36 minutes for ten miles. Irwin took a full minute off that time to complete the ten miles in 35 minutes on the Woodgreen course in the Dave Kane Cycles TT League. The record is subject to a claim being made and ratification by the Board.

Conor McAllister (Ballymena Scott Roof Tiles) was the fastest on the night and the only rider to go below 21 minutes. He stormed home some 47 seconds clear of the second placed rider, Colm Cassidy of Usher IRC. A number of riders recorded sub 22 minutes. It was good to see Aaron Deane (VC Glendale) making a definitive comeback to the league with a time of 21.31 while a some new faces joined the regular band of testers.

Many thanks to all those who came out to help tonight. It made it so much easier for all of us. Special mention to Eamon Burns (Father and son of Phoenix cc), Martin McKernan (Ballymena) Kyle Houston (Phoenix CC), Gordon Parker (Old Beach), Ian Johnston (Team Madigan)and Bill Smyth

With the record being broken tonight it was good to have so many experienced timekeepers to back up the Time Lord, turn stewards and our very own Comm, Martin Lees.

Tommy Lamb was pleased to record a time of 27.15 in his first TT in 10 years although Carl Fullerton's glee was obvious when his time of 26.22 was announced. His scalp was safe for another day.
