Madden Breaks 16 Year Old National TT Record

John Madden of Bann Wheelers set a new National Veteran's Time Trial record today when he recorded a 1:47:23 for the Tommy Givan 50 mile Time Trial. The event promoted by Maryland Wheelers was run on the Woodgreen circuit with riders covering the course three and a half times. The previous record was held by Maryland's Mark Greer who recorded 1.49.12 last year on the same course. However Madden's time also breaks the 16 year old Senior Men's record of 1.47.37 set by Philip Collins (AMEV IRC) in 1993. This is an amazing feat for the Ballycastle veteran who has proved unstoppable this year and who has also broken his own National Vets record for the '10'. All records will be subject to ratification by the Board of Cycling Ireland.

Madden also lifted Gold in this competition for the Ulster '50' Championships. John Heverin of the Clann Eireann Club took silver with a time of 1.50.38 a PB for this distance. Usher's Colm Cassidy took third position with a time of 1.52.27 but is not eligible for a medal. Bronze went to fourth placed rider Niall Shannon of Maryland with a time of 1.53.04.

Irish National Woman's Champion, Heather Wilson of Maryland Wheelers, took gold in the Woman's competition with a time of 2.01.11 while Bann Wheelers' rider Kay Hack, took the silver medal position.

Shannon and Wilson's times combined with that of Alan Quinn was enough to give the promoting club, Maryland Wheelers, the Team medals for the competition.

Cycling Ulster would like to congratulate all our new champions and in particular John Madden on his phenomonal success. This only leaves him the '25' record to beat later on this year!!
