Roe Valley Legends Tour 2018 Now Open for Pre-entry

roeRoe Valley Cycling Club would like to invite you to participate in our upcoming sportive in memory of our late club member Joe Piggot. This year we are pleased to announce two new routes that not only encompass the natural beauty of the Roe Valley but also reflect some of the areas natural heritage and history.

The "Roe Valley Legends Tour" will take you by some of the key area that have been instrumental in providing many of the background settings for local folklore and legends. The highlights include the statue representing the hound of the O'Cahan chief that jumped the River Roe to go for help whilst the clan was under attack. Limavady means "Leap of the Dog" so its certainly a legend that has lived on in history over the centuries! Also theres the monument depicting Cushy Glen on the Windyhill Road. Cushy Glen was the infamous highwayman that robbed stagecoaches as they travelled between Limavady and Coleraine on what was then the Murderhole Road. But in my opinion the main attraction is probably what awaits at the top of Binevenagh mountain. Here you will find the Manannan mac Lir scupture that depicts the Celtic God of the Sea and Broighter Gold. He is seen as the guardian of the otherworld and used his boat to ferry departed souls to the afterlife. It is also said he controls the weather so lets hope the sun is shining on the day we all come to visit him! The views from Gortmore are spectacular and well worth the climb!!!
