Downey Takes Second Gold in World Cup Events
Mark Downey, riding for Ireland, took his second Gold medal in a World Cup Event last night. The twenty year old from Dromore, won the medal in the Points race on the track in Cali, Columbia. He won his first Gold medal last year at the UCI Track World Cup in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands, again riding in the Points race.
The points race is a bunch race of 120 laps of the velodrome, with sprints every ten laps. The rider with the most points at the finish is deemed the winner.
Mark Downey is over the moon with his win and said, " Two out of two winning another World Cup thanks to all in Cycling Ireland especially David Muntaner Juaneda and Brian Nugent. Say what you want to do and achieve it. This time I did it the hard away riding against everyone in the race on my own after taking a lap. Now it is time to look towards the World Championships."
Mark's home cycling club, Banbridge CC, is hosting the racing season opener today in Annaclone so there is sure to be a festive atmosphere as the club celebrates Mark's achievements.
The web team at Ulster Cycling News would like to congratulate Mark on his fantastic victory and wish him every success for 2017.
