Loop of the Lough Open for Registration

Loop of the Lough 001I am delighted to bring you news of an exciting new leisure event in the Cycling Ireland calendar promoted by one of Ulster's newest clubs, Aldergrove Cycling Club. As one of my last tasks as Club Development Officer it was my privilege to be involved in helping to form this club and I had several meeting with club officials before they finally decided to join the Cycling Ireland fraternity early in 2016. It is now wonderful to see them ready to undertake the huge commitment of not only organising an exciting leisure event but also taking time out to train new cyclists several times weekly in order that they will be able to participate in this venture either as individuals or as part of a relay ream doing shorter stints. Jim Muldoon, one of the organisers of the event was involved last year in the highly successful Crumlin and Glenavy Schools Walk and Cycle which saw hundreds of children, parents and friends participate. Jim had this to say about the new club,

"Over the past year or so Naomh Seamus GAC have been trying to keep our members active and linked to the Gaelic club, this is how the Cycling club has come about. Aldergrove Cycling Club is fully set up with Cycling Ireland and we are
pleased to announce our own “Loop of the Lough” fundraiser on the 9th of July 2016. We have embarked on a journey not only to raise much needed funds for the Naomh Seamus GAC, but have also promised to donate a massive £10,000.00 of the money to the Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice!

People can register as individuals or a ground relay completing 7 stages of 11 miles each. We decided on a relay to be our main body of people as many within the parish of Aldergrove wanted to take on the challenge, but knew that 77 miles
would be too much of an undertaking."

ll Naomh Seamus, Aldergrove GAC, are delighted to announce that ‘Loop of the Lough’, the 2016 Aldergrove Cycling Challenge will take place on Saturday 9th July 2016.

The event, which is sponsored by Mercury Security Management, challenges cyclists to take part in a 77 mile ‘Loop of the Lough’, to raise funds for the club and Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice.

Cyclists can pedal the full 77mile route around Lough Neagh or choose to take part in a relay team of 7 with each team member completing approx. 11 miles. The route will begin at St. James Aldergrove GAC and travel through Randalstown, Cargin, Ardboe, Magahery, Derrymacash, Aghagallan before finishing at St. James GAC Aldergrove GAC.

Along with Naomh Seamus members, Antrim GAA are supporting this special fundraising event with over 24 relay teams having already signed up to take part and raise much needed club funds and to support life-limited children and their families living across Northern Ireland.

Speaking at the launch of their fundraising event, spokesperson for Naomh Seamus, John Jones said;

"Naomh Seamus have been successful on the field for over 50 years and it’s very important to continue this growth within the parish. We decided to set up Aldergrove Cycling Club to encourage people of all ages and fitness levels to get fit and active. On the back of this we decided to organise Loop of the Lough and to support the Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice. Our goal is to raise a massive £10,000 for the local children’s charity and any further income will be going directly to Naomh Seamus so we can continue to support our local community.

“We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mercury Security Management who are the primary sponsor of this event. Their support will help us to ensure that this event will be one to remember for years to come.” Founded in 2001, Mercury Security Management Limited is Ireland’s largest independently owned Security Management Company. With Headquarters in Lisburn, County Antrim and offices in Dublin, Limerick and London, Mercury Security Management have worked hard over the last decade to become firmly established as a Pioneer of modern day Integrated Security Solutions.

Frank Cullen CEO comments what sponsoring the Loop and the Hospice means to Mercury Security Management. We are delighted to be the main sponsors of the Loop of the Lough challenge. Mercury Security Management always look to ways to make a positive impact to the local community and we are happy to support the local club as well as of course raise money for the Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice.

Jenay Doyle, Community Fundraiser for NI Children’s Hospice added;
“We would like to thank Naomh Seamus, Aldergrove GAC, for choosing to support our charity. We are delighted to be involved with this fantastic fundraising event and we wish them every success.
“Each year NI Children’s Hospice cares for approximately 300 life-limited children and their families. This is only possible because of the continued support we receive from the local community. Naomh Seamus have set themselves a goal of raising £10,000 for our charity which is enough money to pay for 333 hours of Children’s Hospice Care. We simply can’t thank them enough for their support.”
