Fyffe – King of the Mournes

angusNewry Wheelers promoted another top class Tour of the Mournes today. They  pulled out all the stops to ensure everyone enjoyd this prestigious event. The route which was 72 miles in length took in the testing roads around Scarva, Gilford and Banbridge before entering the Mournes with tough hills at Hilltown to Rostrevor, then back to Hilltown via Newtown Road onto Rathfriland with the finish in Newry.

The speed was high from the off and it wasn’t until 25 miles in that a group of 4 clipped away from the bunch. This bunch included David Watson from North down, Craig Rea from Phoneix, Angus Fyfe (Omagh Wheelers) and Ali Mcauley (Team Asea). The group of four worked well together and although the gap was never over a minute the group pushed on and never let up on the pace.

Coming into the finish it was Fyffe who had the fastest sprint beating Macaulay to secon with Watson, third and Rea fourth. Craig Sweetman (Stamullen) pipped Jake Grey (Nicholas Roche PT) for fifth while 

Jude Sands was best of the Wheelers in 7th after a strong finish. Aaron Swan of Ballymoney was eight while Karl Morgan of Phoenix CC and Stewart Thomson of Spires CC completed the top ten.

Speaking to Club Chairman Drew McKinley he praised the efforts of the club members who drove cars, did motorbike marshals, the static marshals, and all those involved in the catering which all helped to promote a great event.He also thanked the PSNI for their assistance on the event. Thanls were also given to the Commissaires on the day.
