Ulster Riders to the Fore at Track Championships
The Irish National Junior Track Championships were held on Saturday at Sundrive Track in sunny but cool conditions. The promoters of the event, the Sundrive Track Team, put on a feast of racing which was thoroughly enjoyed by all the spectators and participants alike. There were time trial, the kilo, sprint, pursuit and scratch races among others. The Junior championships saw a bigger field than usual which is a good sign for the future of track racing in Ireland. The fine conditions led to fast time by many of the riders with records being broken.
Martyn Irvine took time out to come along and support the young riders and his achievements must surely be an inspiration for all the riders there.
There was a full squad of NRPT Magnet.ie riders with Luke Smith taking gold and Marc Heaney silver in the scratch race. Shuana McFadden was second in the Scratch race and took the silver medal.
The most successful rider on the day had to be Shenna McKiverigan (Powerhouse Sport) who has come back from a four month lay off on the bike due to injury. She proved on the day that she was back in full form by taking no less that four gold medals and breaking the Irish record for the outdoor 200m. (to be ratified). Her team-mate Xeno Young took bronze in the Kilo and silver in the sprint.
Harvey Barnes of East Tyrone took the gold medal in the sprint competition. This first year Junior is certainly fulfilling his early promise as a Youth rider and is going from strength to strength.
Thanks to Dany Blondeel and David McVeigh of the Belgian Project for information and pictures. More pictures of the event can be found HERE
