McLaughlin, McCann and Moore Win at Bann Valley

aThere were wins all around when Bann Valley CC promoted their annual Bann Valley Classic today. There were three races on offer and the riders had to tackle the tough, rolling circuit. As usual Bann Valley had done a tremendous job in seeing to the safety of the event and had lots of marshalls out along the route. The weather was dry and sunny but very cold.

The A1/A2 race  saw a small group break away from the peloton. This group included Steven McAllister (Ballymoney CC), Ronan McLaughlin (Foyle CC), Paul Wilkinson (West Down Wheeelers), David Hamilton (North Down CC) and the Carn Wheelers duo of Ali Gribbon and Jonny Taylor. Matthew Brennan (Ballymena CRC) and Ryan Bankhead (Ballymoney CC) also managed to join this group which rode well together.

They were chased by the main bunch but in particular another small group which had managed to open a gap. This group included Glenn Kinning of Kinning Cycles, Gary Donalds0n (Omagh Wheelers) and Gary Cranston (East Antrim Audi).

The break away group then split with McLaughlin, Gribbon and Hamilton opening a gap on the others and this proved to be the winning combination as they stayed clear to the end. McLaughlin had the power to take the lead and cross the line to take the win followed in by David Hamilton and Ali Gribbon. Steven McAllister took fourth ahead of Jonny Taylor, Paul Wilkinson and Ryan Bankhead. Gary Cranston, Matthew Brennan and Ciara McVeigh (Phoenix CC) completed the top ten.

In the A3 race the rolly course saw the bunch getting strung out on each lap. Five riders got clear with five laps to go and opened a 45 second gap on the main field which they held to the end. This group included Harvey Barnes of East Tyrone, Conor McCann (Asea Wheelworx), Ethan Fleville (Clann Eireann), Colm Watson (VC Glendale) and Sean McCorry (VC Glendale). In the end it was Junior rider Conor McCann riding for Asea Wheelworx who powered through the laps to take the win from first year junior Harvey Barnes of East Tyrone CC.

Third place was taken by the more experienced Colm Watson who has been steadily creeping up in to the results and is riding consistently well.  It was another Junior, Ethan Fleville of Clann Eireann, who took fourth ahead of Sean McCorry (VC Glendale), Mark Glendinning (Spires CC), Colin McElderry (Maryland Wheelers) and Mark McGinley (Errigal Cycling Club)

In the A4 race it was Gavin Moore, North Down CC who proved to be a winner on the day. He was followed in by James Carmody (Apollo CC) and Noel Brian Mac Diarmada (Errigal Cycling Club).

Stephen Mullan (North West Cycling Club), John Quigley (Foyle CC), Dean Lockhart (Carn Wheelers), Wayne Graham (Banbridge CC), Garrett Fitzgerald  (VC Glendale), Padraig Dougan (Carn Wheelers) and Ian Weir (West Down Wheelers).

As usual Bann Valley had laid on a terrific spread of food which was much appreciated by everyone. Many thanks also to the Comms on the day, Jack Watson and Andy Wills.
