Packed Racing Programme at Mid Ulster GP

There was a full programme of racing today when Harps CC promoted their annual Mid Ulster GP. The day dawned bright and sunny but this was deceptive as it was bitterly cold with a biting wind and temperatures not rising above 6 degrees. This did not discourage the large number of Youth riders who turned up or the women and 50 Plus Masters who were also racing in the morning events.

In the afternoon there were two races on offer, namely a combined A1 to A3 race and a separate A4 race. Such is the growth in cycling that both races had sold out almost as soon as entry had opened and there was a waiting list of fifty riders for the A race.

First off in the morning were the U16’s who had to complete four laps of the 7.2 mile circuit. The racing here went from the off. It was not long before East Tyrone’s Harvey Barnes made a break for it but Ethan Flevelle was close on his wheel. These two battled it out over the four laps but in the end it was Barnes who had the legs to take the win. Niall Lawrence of Bann Valley as extremely strong throughout as was Michael McGlynn of Errigal. These two took the next two places with Robbie Doherty (Ballymoney CC), Shea Kelly (Island Wheelers) and Kyle Fisher ( Lakeland CC ) filling the remaining positions.

The U14’s had to do two laps of the course. This race was hotly contested and no one was allowed to get away for very long. The sprint began as the riders turned into the final corner and onto the finishing strait. Cahir Doyle who had been making efforts all day tried to go but the canny U14’s were prepared and were already choosing their lead out men. Aaron Heaney proved his spinning skills and np managed to take the win. He was hard pressed by Ciaran Cahoon (Clann Eireann) who took second and Cahir Doyle of Carn Wheelers who took third. James Glasgow of East Tyrone was fourth with Rob Lawrence of Bann Valley completing the prize list.

The U 12’s had one lap to complete and they stayed fairly in tact until half a mile from the finish when Darren Rafferty of Island Wheelers broke away and opened a gap on the main field. Riders gave chase causing the bunch to stretch a little. Rafferty maintained his lead and took the win easily. There was a very close two up sprint for second with Ronan Montgomery of Ballymoney getting the verdict over Phoenix’s Shea O’Kane. Scott Roberts of Island Heelers was fourth while the  next two places were taken by girls Ellie Kelso of East Tyrone and Sara Elder of Carn Wheelers. Aidan Hegarty of Apollo CT and Liam McAuley of Ballymena completed the top eight.

The Masters were set off to do four laps of the rolly circuit. There was a big turnout for this event despite the fact that many of the ‘usual suspects’ were off doing hard training miles in Mallorca. Seamus Walshe of Phoenix CC went early on and opened a small gap on the field which he held for a lap and a half before being reeled in. In the end it came down to a bunch sprint which was taken by Alan Roper of (Phoenix CC) followed by Brian Hannon of Banbridge and Paul Kirk of North Down.

Despite the fact that there was a National Women’s series race on in Bohermeen almost twenty women showed up for this event with many first timers such as Claire O’ Neill of Square Wheels  taking to the roads around Cookstown, the Rock and Sandholes. Although the pace wa shigh the women stayed together with the result being decided by a bunch sprint which was taken by Joanne Regan of Termoneeny from Mairead McGurk of Carn Wheelers and relative newcomer Lisa Cameron of Team Madigan. Alwynne Shannon  (Newry Wheelers) and Claire Gillespie of Ballymena completed the lineup.

There were full fields for the afternoon races which was run over the longer nine mile circuit. First off were the A3’s who were given a short advantage over the A1’s and 2’s. By the third lap the groups had come together and the pace was lifted.

The A4 race saw some hard riding by the bunch but no one managed to get away. The race came down to a bunch sprint which was taken byDarren Hutton of Bann Wheelers followed in by Des Flanagan (Phoenix CC) and Billy Henderson (Keevan CC)

The A Race was won by Jake Gray of NRPT with team-mate Conor McCann Second and Angus Fyffe of Omagh Wheelers third.

More on these two races later .

Harps CC put on a great day’s racing and the club had fielded a huge number of marshals who were well placed throughout the course. Harps also provided a great range of refreshments after the race which was well received by everyone. Gary Maguire was kept busy as chief judge as he had to sort out a number of close sprints. Many thanks to the ambulance crew and to commissaires for the day, Peter Field and Kevin Hughes.
