Bye To the Bunch at Annaclone

aNewry Wheelers' new signing, Andrew Bye, lived up to his name as he said 'Goodbye' to the bunch in the A race at the Travers Engineering Annaclone RR today to take a clear win by over two minutes. The race was a handicap affair with the  A3's getting a three minute lead over the A1's and 2's.

Racing was aggressive in the bunch although a breakaway from the A1's and 2's stormed along the bumpy roads steadily eating in to the deficit.

However by the time they caught the A3's a small group had broken away which included Matthew Brennan of Ballymena CRC, Niall O' Hagan of Ballymoney and Andrew Bye of Newry.

It is expected that Bye will not remain an A3 for long. Originally from England he was a chhampion triathelete before he tried rowing and finally joing Kinston as a cyclist. It wasn not long before his talent was spotted and he was signed up to Sigma Sport. He was the Southern Counties Road Race Champion in 2008 and was sixth in stage 3 of the FBD Rás that same year.

The A4 race followed the normal pattern with the bunch mainly staying together for  four laps. However in the penultimate lap there was crash which brought down most of the bunch. Fortunately there were no serious injuries although at least one carbon frame saw its last racing days. The crash did however allow some riders to gain  a lead and the the group was well split in the last  lap as riders rode hard to get back together. Chris McGlinchy (CRC) took the win well clear of Mark Seargeant ( Keevan CC) and Kevin McKinney (Armagh City Cyclists).

There was a massive spread of food back at Annaclone GAA including two types of steaming hot soup. Many thanks to all those involved in the catering as it was much appreciated on such a cold day and it certainly did not last long as the riders kept going back for more.

Many thanks also to the two Commissaires on the day, Brendan Kirk and trainee Comm Mark Lamb. Thanks also to Christina who did such a great job with the radios.

Thanks also to the Travers Enginneering for their continued sponsorship of the race.

A full report will follow.
