Sunshine and Muck at Falls Park

aIt was an historic day for Falls park last Sunday when the first ever cyclocross event took place. The event was packed and cars were parked the length of the Falls Road.

VC Glendale were hosting the event and had certainly put in the groundwork. Pre-event planning had covered all the bases and the route markers were out in force from 6.30 that morning.

Frank Campbell and Joe Smyth, long time stalwarts of the club all played their part. Brendan Doherty known as the Doc, was the driving force behind staging the event and he was a busy man on the day.

He need not have worried however as the whole club came out to the play their part. Some of the Imps, Glendale's Youth Section , made sure that everyone knew that there was delicious soup on offer as well as tea/coffee. sandwiches and tray bakes.

The women from the club who organised the catering were kept busy from early morning but always had a smile on their faces.

A big word of thanks must go to the Belfast City Park workers who were on hand all day helping to clear up, organise parking etc. They could not have been more helpful.

The size of the park was an eye opener for many and the views to the Black Mountain were superb.

Even though the sun came out, heavy rainfall on Friday had ensured that the ground was wet and as the various events got underway the ground became more churned up. This was true cyclocross conditions. There were quite a few slips and falls which amused the spectators but it wasn't only the riders who 'came a cropper'' in the slippery conditions!!

The racing was excellent with the usual Youth racing from early morning right through to the mountain bike support race through to the B Cyclocross event for newcomers and finally the Senior A race.

Glen Kinning of Kinning Cycles made up for his disappointment last week by taking the win on Sunday from Ray O’Shaughnessy of Cuchulainn CC. Darnell Moore of Caldwell Cycles,  who is leading the series had to be content with third on this occasion. We wish Glen every success when he heads to Milton Keynes where on Saturday November 29th for the first time in history a round of the UCI Cyclocross World Cup will take place outside of mainland Europe. Glen will be competing for Ireland.

In the women's event it was Claire Oakley who took the win from Val O'Neill of Phoenix and Hannah Ormesher, DID Electrical Racing Team. This was good riding by Claire who had opted for slicks which in the conditions se faced may not have been the best choice.

The B event was won by Aaron Parks  of Armagh City Cyclists, from  Garth Young, Dromore CC and Keith Hooks, North Down CC.

The Support mtb event was won by Sean Bradley of Carn Wheelers from Dominic McCartan, Apollo CT and Nathan Sturrock, Banbridge CC

Trudy Brown took the win in the MTB Support race for women. Ruth Aiken of Banbridge CC was second with Alison McMullan, North Down CC third.

Many thanks to all concerned for a great day and a wonderful new venue for cycling. There were certainly a few kids whojust loved the conditions especially down near the bike wash.
