Ulster squad performs strongly at the Inter-regional Mountain Bike Championships

The Inter-regional Mountain Bike Championships took place over the weekend of the 19-21 September 2014. The competition was open to youth riders aged 16 or under to compete against 13 other UK regions. The three day competition was based at Hadleigh Farm in Essex where the 2012 Olympic MTB event was held. The Ulster squad for this year consisted of four riders: Adam Duff, Calvin Moore, Cameron McIntyre and John Buller.

Day 1 was the skills event day. The riders could score a maximum of 18 points across the 6 disciplines with a timed run of two laps of the pump track being used to split the results. Adam had a great start at this event picking up 17 points.

Day 2 was split into two sessions. In the morning there was the handicap race where the riders were gridding based on the results from day 1 but then having to suffer a 10 second penalty for every point dropped on day 1. Cameron overcame his 30 second handicap to finish 10th.

In the afternoon there was the Eliminator rounds where the riders had to finish in the top 7 in their race to progress up through the finals. All riders were able to race three times with the last race being split into four "Finals" with the top riders in the "A final". Adam finished highest in 11th place.

Day 3 started with a team relay with all rider taking part. This is an exciting set up which would work well as an inter-club event for the future.

In the afternoon there was a 7 lap cross-country race around the main track. Cameron had a terrific result finishing 9th in this competition.

A great event run by British Cycling in association with Active Essex. Well done to our riders who performed like professionals. Many thanks to William Mulligan for getting all the equipment to the Hadleigh Farm and then in his role as coach for the competition - super job. Also a big thanks to Simon Curry and the rest of the support team back at home for spending time getting the riders ready for the competition.

This was a great learning experience for me and I hope to bring some of the ideas forward for the 2015 season.
