Cassidy Takes Win but McIntyre is Champion
On Sunday 6 July 2014 Maryland Wheelers organised the annual Tommy Givan Memorial 50 mile time trial event on the Woodgreen circuit. This event doubled up as the Ulster 50 mile TT championships. The day was pleasant enough, sunny with light winds, not ideal for time trialling with most riders claiming that this year's conditions were slower than before. The fastest rider on the day was Colm Cassidy (UCD) in a time of 1 hour 42 minutes and 26 seconds which was quite a bit off the 1:40:10 set by Marcus Christie last year. Colm was not eligible for an Ulster medal which went to Sean McIntyre (Orchard-Shelbourne) in a time of 1:47:44. Sean has been knocking on the door lately, but has had to contend with the two Johns (Madden and Heverin). Today he finally got there, with John Madden 2nd Ulster rider and John Heverin 3rd.
Eileen Burns (Ballymena RC) took the women's' prize, bettering some men on the way. Ballymoney CC took the team event by a very small margin from Ballymena RC and Phoenix CC. After the race everyone was treated to a lovely cup of coffee from a little mobile coffee-bar. Many thanks to the volunteers from Maryland Wheelers for organising the event.
