Ards CC Recognise their World Champion

aLast night Ards CC put on an evening to recognise and celebrate the achievements of one of their former members,Martyn Irvine. The attendees were welcomed by Desi McIlrath, Chairman of Ards CC before Billy Kirk came on stage to give some background information about the evening.

He talked about beating Martyn when he did his first time trial as a young 18 year old . But as Martyn persevered with the cycling Billy recognised from an early stage that this was someone special.

Morris Foster MBE was then asked to speak. He had followed Martyn;s career especially when he began to specialise on the track. He talked about watching the World Championships last year and how delighted he was for the outcome.

The brainchild of Ards President, Billy Kirk, the celebration was held in the Web Theatre in Newtownards where the film of last year's World Championship Scratchrace was shown. For those in attendance watching the race was  just as nailbiting as the first time. However with foreknowledge of the outome there was many a giggle at some of the commentators remarks as they predicted Martyn would blow before the end. When Martyn crossed the line to take the World Championship title and the rainbow jersey there was a massive round of applause.

Ards CC had got special Ards CC jersey designed for Martyn with the rainbow bands on the collar and sleeves. As Martyn could not be in attendance the jersey was presented to his parents Marie and Mervyn by Marian Lamb, Secretary of Cycling Ulster and Morris Foster MBE.

Following the presentations there was time to chat and catch up with old friends as Ards CC had organised tea and sandwiches for everyone after the event.

Martyn is currently in Cali in Columbia at the 2014 World Championships where he had just won a silver medal in the Pursuit. This is a fantastic achievement from a rider who had suffered a broken femur not long after his 2013 Championship and then when he had recovered from that suffered a bad fall in Gent. Martyn and his wife Grace will be based in Denver Colorado for the next two years.

Many thanks to all at Ards CC for a lovely evening.
