20/06/2013 National Time Championships
There were good fields in the various sections of the National Time Trial championships which took place in Carlingford promoted by Cuchullainn CC.
The course was relatively flat although lumpy and exposed to the winds.
Ulster born Michael Hutchinson (In-Gear Quickvit Trainsharp RT (UK) proved to be almost a minute faster on the day than Belfast's David McCann (Synergy Baku Cycling Project) the current title holder with his recorded time of 50.07. A frequent visitor to the Dave Kane League was Colm Cassidy (Octto-Cervélo Team )who came in third to lift the bronze medal. Dromore's Sean Downey of the An Post Sean Kelly squad had to be content this time with fourth position.
In the Under 23 competition Ryan Mullan (Team IG Sigma Sport) set the marker for others to follow with a fantastic 50.22 which would have given him the silver in the Elite Championships. There was a close battle fr the silver medal position with Conor Dunne (Vl Technics – Abutriek) and Marcus Christie (Foyle Cycling Club) battling it our withDunne getting the silver medal by a mere one second with his 00:51:27. First year senior, Daniel Stewart from East Antrim Audi took fourth so I am sure there is more to be seen from this young man in the coming years.
Caroline Ryan of the Garda CC/Richies Bike Store) lifted the Women’s title with a time of 00:57:56 from Melanie Spath (Team Tibco) and Eve McCrystal (Garda CC/Richies Bike Store). The woman’s entry was disappointing and there was no only one woman from Ulster and she had to come all the way from Melbourne to compete. This was Clare Dallat (Bicycle Superstore/Black Rose Racing) from Portrush who has been taking part in the Nationals for the past few years. Clare came fifth in the women's competition with a 01:00:14. She will line up with other Ulster women on Saturday's road race.
In the Paracycling class Para C1-C5 it was Cathal Smyth (Fixx Roulers ) who lifted the title from Colin Lynch (Macclesfield Wheelers (UK) and Enda Smyth (Fixx Roulers) with his time of 00:58:22.
Ulster Darrell Erwin of the Ulster Handcycling Association lifred bronze in the Para H1-H4 with a time of 29.30.
Paul O’Flaherty (Cycle 4sick Children) was fastest however with his time of 27:45 with Declan Slevin (Unattached) in silver medal position.
Ulster did well in the Tandem competition which was won by Ryan and Shaw (Upperchurch Drombane Cycling – Aqua Blu) with a time of 51.32. In silver medal position wasour own Andy Fitzgerald with his new pilot Ian Inglis of Curran Racing. They put in a fantastic effort to record a 51.50.
Phoenix CC were also in the mix with the pairing of Brown – Bennett (Cheltenham & County CC – Phoenix CC) taking the bronze medal.
The action continues on Saturday with the both the Women and the Veterans taking to the roads around Carlingford vying for the coveted Champion’s title in their respective competition. Why not get along to Carlingford and give them some support. Full details of the events can be found HERE.
