Evans In A Class Of His Own

Tommy Evans (Totalcycling.com) was in a class of his own at Bangor on Saturday when he outshone the field to take the inaugural Northern Ireland Open Road Championships, a venture aimed at bringing together all competitive cyclists from the province.

The events, on the Bangor-Stockbridge Rd-Groomsport 7.2 mile circuit enjoyed sunny conditions, with a stiff breeze making the outward leg to Donaghadee difficult, and also peoviding a headwind uphill finish. In the feature event breaks went early, but without main favourite Evans they were doomed to failure.

On lap 5 Evans jumped across to a small break including Gary McKeegan (Team Madigan) Mark Greer (Maryland Whs) and Norman Campbell, but they were unable to hold his pace, so the remaining laps turned into a time trial for the stylish Banbridge man, who eased up on the last lap to come in 1.46 ahead of two chasers, with Jim McConnell (East Antrim) taking the verdict on the line from Ballymena`s Ryan Connor.
