Ulster Youth Riders for Olympic MTB Park

Seven Ulster youth riders are off this weekend to follow in the wheel tracks of the 2012 Olympians when they take part in the UK Inter-Regional Youth Mountain Bike Championships taking place at the Olympic Mountain Bike park at Hadleigh Farm in Essex.

They will be lining up with the best in Britain to compete over skills and speed events in a 3-day competition to determine the best region in the UK.

Three of the squad have already competed in this type of UK regional championship event, having been to the Sainsbury`s UK School Games in May for a Road and Track event in what was a mini-Olympics, however this weekend British Cycling have organised a stand-alone Mountain Bike event which will see all regions of the UK represented.

Following the 2012 seasons performances at all disciplines and a final trial day last month, the selection panel had a tough task in selecting the final team, which will be headed up by 2012 Under 16 Ulster XC league champion James Curry (Banbridge CC). He will be joined by Ryan Orr (Ballymoney CC), Declan Mulholland (Clann Eireann CC) and relative newcomer and runner up in the XC League Darnell Moore from Omagh Wheelers.

A three rider Girls team is a Banbridge trio of 2012 Under 14 XC league winner Shannon Buller, Shenna McKiverigan and Jill Curry.

The team depart tomorrow (Friday) with Nicola Oldham as manager who will fly with the riders, and William Mulligan who will sail and drive overland with the bikes.

The trip is funded by Cycling Ulster through the Sport NI Ulster Talent Budget, and Cycling Ulster wishes the riders every success in what will be a unique experience.
