Sun Shines on Carn Classic

aThe sun shone on the riders who lined up today for the Carn Classic promoted by Carn Wheelers. The combined A1-A3 race took to the roads around Maghera first with a gap of two minutes separating the 3’s from the rest of the field. They had four laps of the fourteen mile circuit to complete before turning into the finishing straight towards Maghera.

There were a lot of hungry cyclists in this bunch as this is the last race before the Easter stage races of the Tour of the North, Ras Mumhan and Gorey.… Read more

Watson Takes Caldwell by a Whisker

aAfter seventy five miles of hard racing in today's Wallace Caldwell race promoted by Ballymena CRC the winner had to rely on modern technology to make the call. Unlike previous years this year the bulk of the field came into the home straight together and the last five hundred metres saw many of Ulster's top riders vying for position.

As this was the second counter in the Irish National Road Race Series many of Ireland's top riders were taking part so the pace was high throughout the event.… Read more

St Patrick Smiles on Adair

2aMatt Adair of Banbridge CC had more than the  'luck of the Irish' with him at the Clann Eireann promoted St Patrick's Day race outside Lurgan. Adair who is noted for his skills in off road cycling began riding open road races a few years ago and represented Cycling Ulster on several occasions with notable wins in races such as the Glengesh stage of Rás Dhun na nGall.

In the Clann Eireann Cup event for A3 riders he managed to get away in break with club-mate Tommy Evans (Banbridge CC) who is making a comeback to competitive cycling after a break of several years.… Read more

McGlinchey Takes First Win of Season in Donegal

aIn a hard fought race today in Donegal Chris McGlinchey of Chain Reaction Cycles took his first win of the season but he had to fight for it all the way.  The race for A1-A3 riders covered two laps of a hilly course before turning back onto the main Letterkenny-Derry road to finish at Burt.

Halfway through the race a group of five made  a clear break from the chasing peleton. This group included  Jake Gray, Conor Halvey (Errigal CC), Ali Gribbon (Carn Wheelers), Aaron Swan (Ballymoney CC) and Ronan McLaughlin (Foyle CC).… Read more

Great Turn-out for Youth TT

There was great representation across ages from both boys and girls at the David McCall Foundation Youth Time Trial. The event, which has now become an annual fixture in the Youth calendar was supported by members of Maryland Wheelers and for this year is the first round of the Ulster youth League.

There were winners all around with Cora Harkin of Errigal CC taking first place in the Under 12 girls event while Maria MacAllister of Island Wheelers and Amanda Gallagher of Caldwell Cycles were the winners in the U14 and U16 girls category respectively.… Read more

St Patrick’s Day Cycling Events

ST-PATRICKS-DAY2-images-and-graphicsThe David Mccall Foundation Youth Time-Trial March 17th 2016.
The David McCall Foundation will once again host their annual youth time trial for U12 to U15 riders.Sign on at St. John's Hall Crumlin, 5 Lurgan Road BT29 4QA. This will be the first event in The Cycling Ulster Youth Academy League.

Other Leagues events include the Ciclisport GP on 2nd April (this is only for U14 & U16), PJ Logan on 3rd April (U12’s only), Emyvale GP on 22nd May and the Crit In The Park on17th June

Points for the league will be awarded to the top 5 boys and top 3 girls in each age group, U12,13,14,15,16 at each event, with prizes being awarded to the riders in each category with the highest number of points at the end of the series.… Read more

Tour of Ulster Opens Monday 21st

logo-3The 2016 AmberGreen Energy Tour of Ulster will take place over the May bank holiday 30th April – 2nd May 2016. This year’s race will be based in the County Tyrone village of the Moy.

This race will fill up fast as it one of the last big stage races before the Rás and teams from all over Ireland will be using it as their final preparation. It is a prestigious race to finish not alone win as it is renowned for having long, tough stages which sees a lot of high quality, aggressive riding.

Heaney Takes Danny Boy in Close Sprint

aIt was all action at Feeny today when Roe Valley CC promoted their Danny Boy Races. There was racing for A3, A4, Women and Masters and all had to compete over a rolly twelve mile course with the long drag back towards Feeney to contend with in each lap.

The Women and Masters race saw a large crowd take to the roads to complete two laps of the course. While some riders were dropped in the first lap, as the drag took its toll,  a group did stay together until the finish.… Read more

Aiken Does it Again

aRoger Aiken of ASEA-Wheelworx took another victory today when he won the Tour of Ards and lifted the Tommy Brown Memorial trophy. Although th eday started off with heavy rain it soon cleared and the eighty strong bunch were treated to some mild spring sunshine. However this was the only mild thing about the race as the pace quickly picked up.

Eventually an eight man break developed over the course of the 100km course which included many of the top riders in Ulster. Among these were ASEA riders Roger Aiken and Ali McCauley, Craig McAuley (Caldwell Cycles), Chris McGlinchey (ChainReaction), Glen Kinning (Kinning Cycles), David Hamilton (North Down CC), Aaron Swan (Ballymoney CC) and Craig Rea (Phoenix CC)

Coming to the finish Aiken broke away with Craig McAuley (Caldwell Cycles) being the only one to go with him.… Read more

Tour of the North Attracts Top Riders

aThe Tour of the North committee has just released a provisional start list for the Easter International stage race. This promises to be an exciting event with a new course and all the top riders from Ireland in the mix as well as returning riders from Britain. Throw a few unknown teams in to the mix and all is set for an interesting race.

The entries show at least seven of the overall top ten finishers in last year's race all set to line up, and, as they proved in 2015, they are very aggressive riders.… Read more
