Wins for Murphy and McComb in Mid Ulster

Harps CC promoted the Mid Ulster GP today on the Sandholes circuit near Cookstown in bright but very blustery  conditions. Absent from the calendar for a year or so, this event attracted full fields for both senior races.

In the A race there was a three minute handicap from the A3’s back to A1’s which was would be quickly eaten up over early laps of the ten mile circuit.

Alistair Macauley of Phoenix decided to test the waters in the first lap and opened a gap of 15 seconds on the bunch.… Read more


One Two Trumps at Dromore Races

It was very much a case of One-Two Trumps at Dromore today when Banbridge CC promoted a feast of racing for all categories as the top two places in many of the races were taken by  riders from the same club.

An Post, Banbridge, Phoenix CC and Errigal CC all produced first and second places in some of the events.
John Beggs Memorial Race

First into the fray were the A1-A3’s with the A3’s receiving a short handicap over the rest of the field. With 116km to cover over a lumpy circuit which included the long drag at Ballykeel this was no easy race.… Read more


David McCall Foundation Youth RR Events this Weekend

The opening round of the David McCall Foundation-Cycling Ulster Youth RR and Crit League for all youth categories will take place on Saturday 28th April when Banbridge CC promote the John Beggs/Sean McGreevy Memorial races in Dromore, Co. Down. The second event comes hot on the heels of this one with the Harps CC Youth events the following day.

This will be the third year that the series has been supported by the David McCall Foundation and it should prove to be another exciting season with a total of nine events included for Under 16 and Under 14 riders and seven for the Under 12 competitors. … Read more


North Down GP and Groucho GP Open for Entries

Groucho's GP 12th May : Places are still available in both the A2/A3 and A4 races and the race is again being generously sponsored by Groucho's Bar. we would obviously like as big a field as possible.  First prize for the A2/A3 race is again £100 and it will be 8 laps of the Tandrgee 100 circuit with the finish back in Richhill up the climb of Tandragee Street and Irish Street.  The Masters race is 4 laps with the finish on the circuit.  Prizegiving and refreshments will be in Groucho's bar afterwards. … Read more


This Week’s Road Events Updated

Thursday 26th April - Spires Time Trial Trilogy Round 1 - Toome
On Thursday Spires CC branch into the world of open event promotion when they run the first of their open trials on the Toome Course. There will be three events in this series, all of which will take place on the Toome course. Sign-on will be from 6.00pm and will take place in the Park and Ride facility on the Toome side of the bridge. The first person will be set off at 7.00pm.… Read more


Congratulations to Ulster Youth

Ulster Youth riders headed to Drogheda last weekend to pit themselves against the best Youth riders in Ireland at Rás na nOg. This annual event promoted by Drogheda Wheelers is now in its fifth year and is always a highlight in the Youth calendar.

Competition this year was very tight in all categories with everything to play for on the last day.

In the U12 section the brother and sister duo of  PJ and Ciara Doogan of Errigal CC were  in close competition with Emily Birchall of Fermoy CC.… Read more


Beggs/McGreevy Races Open for Pre-entry

On Saturday 28th April Banbridge CC will be hosting a full days racing to accommodate all categories around the John Beggs and Sean McGreevy Memorials on the well-known Dromore circuit. With the inclusion of Ballykeel hill and Drumlough every lap it’s a testing race for everyone and always ensures a worthy winner.  Last year saw a victor in Martyn Irvine who recently secured an Olympic spot for Ireland after a successful World Track Championships in Melbourne.

All riders wishing to partake in the senior races are asked to pre-register to assist with sign-on by emailing Wilbur Aiken (wilbur.aiken@btinternet.com) by no later than Wednesday 25th April, including your full name, club/team, category & 2012 licence number. … Read more


Great Fun at Rathfriland Youth Races

Rathfriland town square was the venue for two hours of fast and furious racing from U-8 up to U-14 level. The racing was similar to track racing with two riders competing each event and starting at opposite sides off the square to prevent accidents.

The whole event went like clockwork with approximately 40 races to eventually whittle the riders down until the final two in each age group. This type of racing is most entertaining for spectators with almost constant action among the kids who were enjoying the experience immensely.… Read more


Ulster Off-Road News

Ulster Cross-Country Mountain Bike Series - Round 1
This will take place on Sunday 15 April 2012 at Ballykelly Forest, Limavady (subject to Forestry approval) and will be hosted by Strabane/Lifford CC.   The course was last used back in 2000. There are 12 race categories in total for the Under 8s up to seniors.  Sign on opens at 9.30am.

Youth races start at 11.00 am, U14, U16 and some senior races start at 12:00. Main senior races start at 2.00pm. The senior course is around 3 miles in length.… Read more


Good Luck to All Ulster Riders on National Teams

A good contingent of Ulster riders have been selected for National Development teams for various events over the Easter Holidays.

The Male 2020 Team for the Youth Tour of Scotland has three of the four riders from Ulster and includes Declan Mulholland, Mark Downey and Aaron Swan.

The men's FBD Ireland Talent Team 2020
Mark Downey (Banbridge CC)
Declan Mulholland (Clann Éireann)
Michael O' Loughlin (Iverk Produce Carrick Wheelers)
Aaron Swan (TCR Racing).

All four riders are current All-Ireland champions in different disciplines. Downey, who will captain the team, has prepared by getting special permission to ride A3 events. … Read more
