Advance Notice Sperrin Sportive Next Sunday

On Sunday 29th May Harps Cycling Club are running their annual Sperrin Sportive. This event is open to cyclist of all abilities with three routes available. There is a 30 miles route, a 55 mile leisure route and a 80 mile sportive route all of which are through the Sperrins. The start is from the Mid Ulster Sports Arena Cookstown and cyclists can sign on and go between 0830 and 1000.

Refreshments are available at the half way point and at the finish; there are also showers and changing facilities at the finish.… Read more


Events This Weekend – Road and Leisure

The New Holland Emyvale Grand Prix takes place on Sunday 22nd May. Emyvale Cycling Club will be hosting races for all categories in the village of Tydavnet. The feast of racing begins with the opening round of the David McCall Foundation Ulster Youth League starting at 11.15am. The senior racing for A1, A2, A3 and A4 riders as well as the fourth round of the Women's National League will start at 1.15pm.

Sign-on is at Tydavnet Community Centre. Tydavnet is situated north of Monaghan town. The village is sign posted on the N2 between Emyvale and Monaghan.… Read more


Thanks to all From Tour of the Glens 2011

Castlereagh CC would like to thank all who took part in their annual Tour Of The Glens this year on Sunday May 1st. In total we had 170 riders signing on at the new start/finish venue of Loughside Recreation Centre on the Shore Road, which worked very well compared to the front of the City Hall. We had a bigger than normal 'slow' group who left at 7.45 with the main group going at 8.00ish after having to wait for the North Down guys who decided riding over would be a good idea.… Read more


Tour of Tyrone 5th June – Entries Open

Island Wheelers will be promoting their Tour of Tyrone Sportive on Sunday 5th June 2011 starting out from the Gorgonis Centre in Coalisland. The event will start at 9am start with sign-on from 8am. Island Wheelers racing events have a high national profile and are highly regarded – and their Sportives follow in that tradition and will be a fantastic days enjoyment for all taking part!

Reminder – Kings Moss Sportive On Line Entry

Kings Moss will be promoting their very popular Sportive in aid of the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children on the 21st May. The event starts at Chain Reaction Cycles in Doagh and will cover 100km along the beautiful Antrim coast. Sign-on is from 8.30am with the event due to start at 10.00am. Places are limited to 200 and entry is via Entry Central The cost is £15. Please register for this very worthwhile cause.

Congratulations to Joe Barr in UCI World Tour

Yesterday in the UCI World Cycling Tour, the Gran Fondo Eddy Merckx held in Evoro, Portugal, Joe Barr was successful in winning the overall mountains classification and age category. It was a difficult, hilly 163 km course in which Joe finished in 30th position. He sprinted for 3rd and was placed 47 seconds behind the overall winner on the cobbled 1km climb to the finish.

Joe was away for 112km with one other rider to take the mountains classification.

This fantastic result now qualifies Joe for the UCI World Championship final in Belgium in September.… Read more


Gort na Drum Sperrin Sportif Raise Funds for Charity

Roe Valley CC welcomed 120 riders to Gort na Drum House for the 4th annual Sperrin Sportif. Seventy riders took on the 65 mile route and fifty the 30 mile route. Pleasant sunshine, accompanied by very stiff winds, made for a difficult day in the Sperrins. However, this was all forgotten about when the craic, banter and stories of heroics were shared at the barbeque after the finish.

Many thanks to Patricia and her staff at the Gort na Drum for their hospitality and support, Drum GAC for use of their shower and changing facilities and also to Pauline of the Red Cross, who thankfully had an uneventful day.… Read more


Thanks from Third World Pedal Pushers

I just wanted you to know that our tour on 17th of last month was a great success. We have been able to donate £2000 to Let The Children Live in Colombia.We would like to pass on the thanks of our group via the Cycling Ulster website to all the cyclists from the different clubs who supported us this year. Around 186 riders participated in the Downpatrick Third World Tour, the best turn-out to date. Next year will be our 25th annual cycle so we will have to pull out all the stops.… Read more


Kilbride Run – Great Day Out

About 110 riders turned up this morning to support Kilbride CC in their charity efforts. The riders taking part in the 56 mile challenge faced some tough hills enroute to Glenarm for the lunch stop. Glenarm Baptist Church helped out with this and there were lashings of sandwiches, rolls, cakes and hot drinks to sustain the riders for their journey back to Ballyclare.

The return leg sped along the Coast road for a few miles before turning inland again and some long drags back to the finish.… Read more


Two Great Leisure Events this Sunday, 8 May 2011

On Sunday 8th May cyclists have the option of two well organised leisure cycles promoted by Ulster clubs. With lots of routes on offer riders are spoilt for choice. The events are the Dromara Coastal Challenge organised by Dromara CC and the Gort na Drum Sportif around the Sperrins organised by Roe Valley CC.
