Leisure Events this Weekend

Action Mental Health "Granite Run"  Sunday 6th October
Action Mental Health "Granite Run"  this Sunday 6th at 10am from AMH  Ballydugan Industrial Estate, Ballydugan Road, Downpatrick, BT30 8HG. This event is being promoted by La Lanterne Rouge CC. It is a 55mile/96km cycle around and through the Mournes, Everyone is welcome. The Granite Challenge will kick off the week of World Mental Health Day on Sunday 6th October 2013 at 10.00am.

The Granite Challenge starts at AMH’s New Horizons unit in Downpatrick, cycling via Tyrella towards Dundrum, then along the coast road through the seaside town of Newcastle, towards Annalong.… Read more

Well Done to Danny McSherry

Mizen to Malin on a tandem bike built for two
Armagh Danny as he is often referred to abroad wasn't satisfied with climbing Ben Nevis twice in the one year decided, last week, to cycle from Mizen head in Co. Cork to Malin head in Co. Donegal. Again this is the second time he has completed this event having previously completed it on a single bike in 2002. This tandem cycle event organised through his work with RNIB consisted of 10 tandems piloted by sighted cyclists with blind or partially sighted cyclists as their stokers covering 450 miles in 7 days.… Read more

Register for Tour of South Derry

The Tour of South Derry promoted by Carn Wheelers takes place on Sunday 13th October from Rossa Park in Magherafelt. It is testament to the effort put in by Carn Wheelers that this event has seen a huge growth in popularity over the last few years with almost five hundred signing on  last year.

This annual charity run has now raised over £28,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. The event starts from Rossa Park, Magherafelt and covers a distance of 50 miles.

Following on previous years, there is now a shorter route of 37 miles which by passes the hills near Draperstown and Maghera.… Read more

Weekend Leisure Events

Sunday 29th September - Tour of Monaghan promoted by Emyvale McQuaid Tyres
The Tour of Monaghan  hosted by Emyvale Cycling Club takes place this coming Sunday 29th September. Sign on is in Emyvale leisure centre from 8:30am and the event is leaving the village at 9:30 sharp. Entry is 10 euro.

There will be food stops en route, refreshments and showers available after also. Each group will be accompanied by an experienced club member from Emyvale. There will be a group to suit everyone's ability and speed. … Read more

Reminder – Support Strive for 5

dia‘Strive For 5’ is a group of cyclists from across Northern Ireland who not only share a passion for cycling but also know what it means to manage diabetes in their daily lives. They will be taking part in the ‘Atlantic to Titanic Cycle Challenge’ on Saturday 28th September 2013 and they want you to get involved.

They will be starting the challenge in Ballyshannon at 8.00am and then moving on to Belleek, Enniskillen, Tempo, Fintona, Augher, Aughnacloy, Benburb, Moy, Portadown, Lurgan, Moira, Lisburn and finishing at Titanic Belfast.… Read more

Cody’s Challenge Open for Pre-Entry

Cody Challenge 2013 (300x204)The 2013 Cody’s Challenge is approaching again and we look forward to seeing a fantastic turn out of local cyclists in Richhill on Sunday 20th October to support such a worthwhile cause.

The event was born out a desire to raise much needed funds for Children’s Heartbeat Trust, located at Clark Clinic in the Royal Belfast Hospital in memory of Cody Gallagher, son to Judith and Stephen Gallagher..  During Cody’s time at Clark Clinic the medical team provided unconditional love, support and care to both Cody and the family circle.… Read more

Leisure Events on Saturday 21st & Sunday 22nd September

Alzheimer Charity Cycle Saturday 21st September
This  leisure event on Saturday 21st is being promoted to raise money for the Alzheimer Society. This is being run by one of our newest clubs, Rocky Wheelers from Fermanagh. There are two routes on offer both leaving from Coa Cross. The sign-on for both the 30km and 12 km route is from Coa Community Hall BT94, from 11.00am with the runs starting at 11.30am. Ards CC and Tir Chonaill Gap Say Thanks

Strangford Lough Tour 2013
Exactly one hundred riders came to Newtownards to ride the Ards sportive in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease. This event took place in very difficult weather conditions. The rain hit the event badly around 10.00 am and the wind became stronger every hour after.

With a stop for tea and coffee and food  about halfway (thanks to the tea ladies) the riders set off for the hardest ride they had done this year. Some came from as far away as Dublin.… Read more

Get on Your Bike This Weekend

Once again there are lots of good events on this weekend to attract the growing number of people who enjoy getting out on their bikes no matter what the weather. Many of these events also help our local charities so while you enjoy the camaraderie and craic as well as the hospitality and refreshments provided by the clubs you are also helping many worthy causes.

This weekend leisure cyclists of all abilities are really spoilt for choice with no less than eight excellent events being promoted around the county. These include The Giant’s Causeway Sportive, The Oyster Festival Cycle and Big Ridge Charity Cycle on Saturday 7th September.
