Irvine Takes Silver and Mullen Impresses with Fourth

Defending World Champion Martyn Irvine has won a Silver Medal in the Scratch Race at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Cali, Colombia. The UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team Member rode strongly, putting every effort into defending his title, settled for silver in the fast, aggressive 15km race. Ryan Mullen also impressed, finishing 4th in the Individual Pursuit, narrowly missing out on a medal. Gold in the Scratch Race went to Ivan Kovalev (RUS), with Irvine taking Silver ahead of King Lok Cheung (HKG). These three riders lapped the field, meaning podium position was decided on the line.… Read more

Report on Commonwealth Games Training Camp

aA strong Northern Ireland Cycling team headed off to Glasgow on the 9th February as part of a recce for the Commonwealth Games.

The team, headed by Ryan Connor,

was keen to get as much out of the trip as possible.

The first day saw us arrive in Glasgow at the Beardmore hotel and straight out onto the bikes to take in the road course aided by Neil McLeod of Scottish Cycling. Gordon Goldie gave the team a talk that evening with tips on training roads and the best routes to go which was well received by the team.… Read more

Strong Showing by Mullen in Mexico

Ireland's Ryan Mullen proved his ability to mix with the top Elite riders in the World, when the 19 year old finished 7th in the Individual Pursuit at the World Cup in Guadalajara, Mexico, last night. Mullen, who rides for An Post Chainreaction Sean Kelly team in Belgium, won a Bronze Medal in this event at the European U23 Championships last summer. The Gold Medal was won by Jenning Huizenga (NED), the Silver went to Mauro Agostini (ARG) and Stefan Kueng (SUI) took the Bronze.

Mullen started the 4km race against the clock strongly, fading slightly in the closing laps.… Read more

Ryan Strong Ahead of Worlds,

Ireland's top female track cyclist, Caroline Ryan, showed strong form, winning her Qualifying Heat in the Scratch Race, and finishing 16th overall at the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Guadalajara, last night. Gold Medal winner Xiao Juan Diao (HKG) and Silver Medallist Jannie Salcedo (COL) lapped the field; Evgeniya Romanyuta (RUS) won Bronze.  Ryan Mullen also competed, testing his legs in the Elite Men's Points Race, where he was forced to withdraw after a crash at the halfway mark.

Ryan, who is ranked number two in the World Rankings for Individual Pursuit, won a bronze medal in that category at the World Cup in Agualascientes, Mexico, in December.… Read more

Ryan and Mullen To Compete in Mexico World Cup

Ireland will be competing in the final leg of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup Series in Guadalajara, Mexico this weekend, with Caroline Ryan and Ryan Mullen competing across the endurance events. Mullen, who won two Bronze Medals in the European U23 Championships last summer, is making his senior debut, racing in the Points Race and the Individual Pursuit, while Ryan will be competing in the Scratch Race. Competition begins this Friday, with Mullen and Ryan both competing.

Last month Ryan won a bronze medal in the Individual Pursuit in the World Cup in Aguascalientes, and will be focusing solely on the bunch competition in Guadalajara this weekend.… Read more

Attention Junior Women: National Testing Day 18th January

Cycling Ireland is holding a testing day for junior women in Sundrive Velodrome on Saturday the 18th January, with a view of identifying suitable candidates for the High Performance Track Cycling Programme. Any junior women who wish to attend this trial must contact National Coach Orla Hendron to express interest. With Irish track cycling at an all-time high, this is a ground breaking move for junior women's cycling. Last August saw junior women compete at the Junior Track Cycling World Championships in Glasgow for the first time.… Read more

Commonwealth Games Update

2013 has seen Northern Ireland riders really embrace the challenge of reaching the nomination standard for the Commonwealth Games. Peter Hawkins has joined the list of those that have met the standard bringing the total to 14 riders. With a potential 8 places available competition will be fierce moving into 2014.

There has been a slight change to the nomination criteria, namely the closing date has been confirmed as 26th May at midday. An email explaining this has been sent out to all those that expressed an interest in the games.… Read more

Martyn Irvine BBC NI Sports Personality of 2013

m1Martyn Irvine, the  26 year old rider from Newtownards was today named as BBC NI Sports Personality of the Year. This must be one of the crowning moments for Martyn who began his career with the Ards Cycling Club.

Despite the fact that he had not come through the Youth ranks but had come into cycling in his late teens he soon showed that he had talent. Over the next few years he developed his skills and strengths winning many local road race and time trial events.… Read more

Ryan Lifts Bronze in Mexico

ryan (166x200)After a controlled and gutsy performance in the Women's Individual Pursuit, Caroline Ryan won the Bronze Medal from Ukraine's Anna Solovey at the Track Cycling World Cup in Aguascalientes, Mexico.

Ryan had qualified for the Bronze Medal ride-off with the 4th fastest time, but rode outstandingly in the final, to seize the medal in a new Irish Record of 3.34.257. This is Ireland's first Women's World Cup medal at the elite level. The Gold medal was won by Rebecca Wiasak (AUS), who is the World Number One ranked Pursuiter, silver went to GB's Elinor Barker.… Read more

Talent 2020 Girls Hit the Boards in Alkmaar

trackFriday the 15th November saw the Neenan Travel Talent Team, along with some juniors, board an early morning flight to Holland.   The trip was put together by Alan Neenan of Neenan Travel, so no stone was left unturned.   Accommodation was arranged in a Hotel very close to the Velodrome and a coach was hired to take us from the Airport straight to the Hotel to drop off bags then on to the Velodrome for our first of three sessions with Herman Schenk.

The girls were all very excited and a little nervous to get on the boards, even the girls who had previously ridden on an indoor Velodrome were a little apprehensive, as it had been some time since they had been on the wood.   … Read more
