More Gold in the Bank For Downey

markWinning Streak Continues for Downey and English with a Gold in the Madison in LA

Ireland’s Mark Downey and Felix English have rounded off the final event in the Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Cup in La with a gold medal win in the Madison. The Madison is a new event on the Olympic calendar for Tokyo and the Irish team have made clear their intentions with another dominant performance putting them in first place ahead of Denmark and New Zealand, adding gold to the silver they won last week at the World Cup in Cali.

Downey Takes Second Gold in World Cup Events

3010132.main_imageMark Downey, riding for Ireland, took his second Gold medal in a World Cup Event last night. The twenty year old from Dromore, won the medal in the Points race on the track in Cali, Columbia. He won his first Gold medal last year at the UCI Track World Cup in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands, again riding in the Points race.

The points race is a bunch race of 120 laps of the velodrome, with sprints every ten laps. The rider with the most points at the finish is deemed the winner.… Read more

Gold and Silver for Ulster at International Track

aSundrive track in Dublin played host to an International Track meeting over the weekend and Irish riders were to the fore in all competitions. For Ulster it was the achievements of Ballymena's Eileen Burns and Omagh's Mark Potts which took centre stage.

Eileen Burns took Gold in the Women's Individual Pursuit with a time of 3:57:947 for the 3k. This was almost six seconds faster than runner-up Annasley Park of Great Britain. In itself this was some accomplishment but considering it was Eileen's first time on the track and the first time to use the starting gate it makes her success so much more remarkable.… Read more

Ulster Riders to the Fore at Track Championships

aThe Irish National Junior Track Championships were held on Saturday at Sundrive Track in sunny but cool conditions. The promoters of the event, the Sundrive Track Team,  put on a feast of racing which was thoroughly enjoyed by all the spectators and participants alike. There were time trial, the kilo, sprint, pursuit and scratch races among others. The Junior championships saw a bigger field than usual which is a good sign for the future of track racing in Ireland. The fine conditions led to fast time by many of the riders with records being broken.… Read more

Record Concludes Successful Week For Ireland at Grenchen

Lydia Boylan broke her own National 500m Time Trial Record in the Omnium as five Irish riders completed a successful week of racing at the European Track Championships in Grenchen.

Boylan began day two of the Women's Omnium in 16th place with three of the six races remaining and she moved up a place with a new national record in the 500m Time Trial, eclipsing the mark she set at the Revolution Event in Derby, England last month.

Her 36.628s effort shaved .147s off her previous best on her way to ninth and she topped that with eighth in the race five Flying Lap, her 14.589s helping her rise to 14th in the event ahead of the final Points Race.… Read more

Irish Squad for European Track Championships

A 13-strong Irish squad is putting the finishing touches on its preparations for this week's European Track Championships in Grenchen, Switzerland. Seven women and six men have been selected to take part in a range of events over the five days of the championships including all the individual and team endurance events as well as selected sprint events.

The meeting kicks off in the 250m Swiss velodrome tomorrow evening where Team Ireland will ride in the qualifying rounds of the men's and women's four-kilometre Team Pursuit.… Read more

Rain stops play at the National Youth Track Championships at Orangefield

The National Youth Track Championships in Belfast did not go quite according to plan, or to the weather forecast for Saturday 18 July 2015. A fine but breezy morning saw riders travel from Donegal, Dublin, Limerick, Kanturk, Westport and the closer counties of Ulster to take part in a full days programme which included Time Trials, Sprint and Scratch title races. … Read more

Ulster riders up against the world’s best at International Track GP.

Being a two day UCI C1 track event in Dublin the weekend had the highest class of track cycling ever seen in Ireland. With no less than four reigning world champions in attendance including the reigning 2x Jr women's Road Race Champion looking for Olympic points the competition was going to be very tough. Also present was the 2009 women's World Road Champion, a Commonwealth Games Champion, an Olympic Medalist, the current Irish Women's Road Race Champion, several European Track Champions and countless top Olympic, World and European championship competitors from all over the globe.… Read more
