Report on Commonwealth Games Training Camp

aA strong Northern Ireland Cycling team headed off to Glasgow on the 9th February as part of a recce for the Commonwealth Games.

The team, headed by Ryan Connor,

was keen to get as much out of the trip as possible.

The first day saw us arrive in Glasgow at the Beardmore hotel and straight out onto the bikes to take in the road course aided by Neil McLeod of Scottish Cycling. Gordon Goldie gave the team a talk that evening with tips on training roads and the best routes to go which was well received by the team.… Read more


MTB For the Whole Family Sunday 2nd February

On Sunday 2nd February Lakeland CC will promote a day's mountain biking for the whole family starting off with an event for the very youngest members of the family when they take part in the balance bike race.

Following this there will be races for U8, U10, U12, U14 and U16 boys and girls. After that it is time for the adults to get involved as there will be a woman's race and and A and B races for men.

WANTED: Off Road Commissaires

The College of Commissaires is seeking expressions of interest for off-road commissaires from Ulster. Interested candidates must have been a member of Cycling Ireland for at least 3 years and have a keen interest in off-road cycling (cross-country or downhill). It is expected that a one-day training session will be taking place in the near future most likely on a weekend day. This appeal is being spread across Ireland and the final date and venue for the training has not been set.

Roger Sails to Victory in Ulster CX Championships

DSC_0013 (200x165)Carn Wheelers played host to the 8th and final round of the Ulster Cyclo-cross series, which also doubled up as the Ulster Cyclo-cross championships 2013, at Drum Manor Forest outside of Cookstown.

This was the second year that the club had used this site and they had reshaped the course to make it shorter, faster and more flowing than the previous year.  There was strong winds on race day morning with occasional showers and a cold chill in the air.

photo 4The Cycling Ulster executive would like to congratulate all our young mountain bikers on a very successful trip to Hadleigh Farm. The Cycling Ulster Slane Cycles team worked hard and scooped another medal and gain a great deal of experience over the three days. We would also like to thank manager Nicola Oldham and assistants Simon Curry and William Mulligan as well as all the other volunteers who helped out and supported the riders. Ulster Cyclo-cross season starts this Sunday

The 2013 Ulster Cyclo-cross season kicks off on Sunday 6 October at Lurgan Park, hosted by Apollo CT. This is first of 8 rounds and the return to an excellent venue which has played host to cyclo-cross (CX) races for many years, including national championships. Many thanks to Craigavon Borough Council for their continued support.

The main cyclo-cross races take place at 1 pm however there is a full schedule before this with sign on opening at 09:30 the first race of the day will be the fun race for the Under 6s which starts at 10:30.… Read more


Apollo Finishes XC Series In Style

aThe fifth and final round of the Ulster XC MTB Series for 2013 took place at Craigavon Watersports Centre on Sunday 1 September 2013 and was hosted by Apollo Cycling Team.  The venue is the flattest of the series and is therefore the fastest with long stretches of hard packed earth to ride across this makes this circuit ideal for those riders who are accustomed to doing road races.

As before where there was any incline in the terrain it was exploited effectively to challenge the riders.  … Read more

Good luck to Young Mtbers in Austria

Best wishes to our three Banbridge Cycling Club members  James Curry, Shannon Buller  and John Buller as they make their way to Graz in Southern Austria this weekend .  They are part of a team of six and will join fellow Cycling Ireland members Leah Maunsell, Patrick Michel and Jamie Grifferty to represent Ireland , as part of the Youth Development XC mountain bike  team as they compete in the UEC European Mountain bike Championships. They have put a lot of hard work and training into this team and the upcoming event.  … Read more


2013 National MTB XC Championships at Garvagh Forest

The 2013 National Mountain Bike Cross-Country Championships took place in Garvagh Forest in the town of Garvagh on Sunday 21 July and was hosted by Carn Wheelers. The timing for the race was perfect after a 2 week heat wave in Northern Ireland which left the trails bone dry and dusty. The club had put in a huge effort in creating the trails with lots of variety, from long fire roads allowing ample overtaking possibilities to fast flowing single track, bomb holes, dual slalom descents and only two notable short climbs.… Read more
