Report on Commonwealth Games Training Camp

aA strong Northern Ireland Cycling team headed off to Glasgow on the 9th February as part of a recce for the Commonwealth Games.

The team, headed by Ryan Connor,

was keen to get as much out of the trip as possible.

The first day saw us arrive in Glasgow at the Beardmore hotel and straight out onto the bikes to take in the road course aided by Neil McLeod of Scottish Cycling. XMTB Spring MTB Series Starts Sunday – Youth and Senior Events

xmtbXMTB McConvey Cycles are hosting a series of 3 mountain bike races aimed primarily at the youth riders from the Under 8s up to the Under 16s starting on Sunday 16 February 2014.

The club wish to thank Belfast City Council for their support and ongoing permission to use the venue.

Because of the popularity of this league in addition to the normal program, we will be hosting two separate Senior races taking the following format:

Senior A:

The Senior A race is for riders who are experienced in cross country racing and would normally compete in race categories Senior 1, Senior 2 and Senior 3.… Read more

MTB For the Whole Family Sunday 2nd February

On Sunday 2nd February Lakeland CC will promote a day's mountain biking for the whole family starting off with an event for the very youngest members of the family when they take part in the balance bike race.

Following this there will be races for U8, U10, U12, U14 and U16 boys and girls. After that it is time for the adults to get involved as there will be a woman's race and and A and B races for men.

National Training Camp for Juniors -Skill Based

Cycling Ireland is holding its first Junior Men's Training Camp of the year this weekend, in Ballyhoura, Co. Limerick, where they will be training off-road. While the 2014 Selection Criteria will be announced shortly, the riders attending this camp have been selected based on their 2013 performances and engagement and participation in CI programs in previous seasons.

Coach Neill Delahaye, speaking ahead of the training camp, said:

"This is the first get together of the Junior Men's squad this year, and we are taking them off-road for the weekend and also bringing in some cross training as a new challenge.… Read more

WANTED: Off Road Commissaires

The College of Commissaires is seeking expressions of interest for off-road commissaires from Ulster. Interested candidates must have been a member of Cycling Ireland for at least 3 years and have a keen interest in off-road cycling (cross-country or downhill). It is expected that a one-day training session will be taking place in the near future most likely on a weekend day. This appeal is being spread across Ireland and the final date and venue for the training has not been set.

Women Sample Trails at Barnetts Demesne

aOver forty women attended the first Women's training day of 2014 on Sunday.

With the weather cold but bright everyone was in a good mood and looking forward to the day which was organised by Cycling Ulster's Road Commission Chair, Ryan Connor.

In the interests of safety Ryan had decided to run the event off road incase weather conditions were less than kind. The day started in Belfast Activity Centre with a short talk before those who had never ridden off road previously were fitted for mountain biles by Ryan Connor and Colin Hughes, Cycling Ulster's Youth Officer.… Read more

Women’s Training Day Proves Popular

This Sunday (19th January) sees the first women's training day event of the new season based at Belfast Activity Centre and will take in the trails of Barnetts Demesne. Click HERE for map of location.

The day kicks off at 9.30 and we will spend a couple of hours on mountain bikes doing some skill sessions as well as some trail riding. I must stress that the day is for everyone and not just racing cyclists. So far there has been tremendous interest and we have currently over 30 down to attend.… Read more

Commonwealth Games Update

2013 has seen Northern Ireland riders really embrace the challenge of reaching the nomination standard for the Commonwealth Games. Peter Hawkins has joined the list of those that have met the standard bringing the total to 14 riders. With a potential 8 places available competition will be fierce moving into 2014.

There has been a slight change to the nomination criteria, namely the closing date has been confirmed as 26th May at midday. An email explaining this has been sent out to all those that expressed an interest in the games.… Read more

Three Peaks Trailquest

Dromara CC, who are by now past masters at organising Trailquests, have a  real treat in store for you on Friday 27th December. They will be promoting their Three Peaks Trailquest taking in the 3 peaks of Dechomet, Crotlieve and Slieve Croob mountains  with stunning views of County Down and beyond.

Teams of up to 3 riders are invited to come along and enjoy the craic. U-16s must be accompanied by an adult

Roger Sails to Victory in Ulster CX Championships

DSC_0013 (200x165)Carn Wheelers played host to the 8th and final round of the Ulster Cyclo-cross series, which also doubled up as the Ulster Cyclo-cross championships 2013, at Drum Manor Forest outside of Cookstown.

This was the second year that the club had used this site and they had reshaped the course to make it shorter, faster and more flowing than the previous year.  There was strong winds on race day morning with occasional showers and a cold chill in the air.

The host club had the course well prepared and the first of the riders started to appear at 9:30am.  … Read more
