Champions Crowned at Ulster CX Championships at Mallusk

The 2017 Ulster Cyclo-cross Championships were held at Mallusk Playing Fields on the outskirts of Belfast.  The venue had been used last year for the same event and thanks have to be expressed for Glenn Kinning, his club mates at Kinning Cycles and to the other friends from other clubs who helped out as well.  The course threaded its way around the football pitches making great use of the banks and steps.  A sand trap had been created thanks to a lorry load of sand from Quarrystone. … Read more

Snow Capped Mountains Backdrop to Final Round of CX Series

Donard Park in Newcastle was the venue for the 9th and final round of the 2017 Ulster Cyclo-cross Series.  The beautiful park, lying just behind the main promenade of this seaside town, has the backdrop of the Mourne Mountains, which, at this time of the year were topped with snow.  Race day morning was dry with strong winds blowing cold air off the top of the mountains.  Challenging conditions for the gazebos!  A tremendous job by race director Mickey Clarke and the volunteers from the host club Shimna Wheelers and neighbouring clubs for all the preparations and course setup. … Read more

No Shelter at Larne for Round 7 CX Series

A cold northerly wind greeted riders for Round 7 ofthe Ulster Cyclo-cross series.  The wide open park, behind the Caterpillar (NI) factory at Seacourt in Larne, offers very few places for shelter but does offer great views out across the Irish Sea.  After a heavy night of rain and a short, sharp shower of hail stones around 8:45 am the weather remained bright and dry all day, but the wind didn't go away.  Team Madigan were hard at work on Saturday setting up the course and Sunday morning the team was busy sorting out any broken course tape. … Read more

This is the 6th year that host club Island Wheelers has run an event in this forest and it is thanks to the local council for their support in the lead up and on the day.  Weather wise it was very similar to last year with clear blue skies and great autumn sunshine.  A short shower during the day quickly cleared.  Ground conditions were good especially after the heavy rain the night before. … Read more

Inaugural Killinchy CX Venue a Resounding Success

Delamont Country Park, located just outside the village of Killyleagh alongside the shores of Strangford Lough, is a new venue for the Ulster Cyclo-cross series which took place on Sunday 22nd October.  It was Killinchy Cycling Club's first cyclo-cross race which they organised through the support of the local park wardens and Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.  The popular County Down park offers a play park, a miniture railway, walks to the megalith (erected in 1999) and great views of the lough.

This was Round 4 of the series and thankfully the storm (Brian) the day before had died down to leave a pleasant autumn day, if a little cool. … Read more

Dromara Host Excellent National CX Championships

Tollymore Forest Park, near Newcastle County Down, was the venue for the 2017 Irish National Cyclo-cross Championships for the second year in a row.  Dromara Cycling Club stepped up to host the event again after great reviews from the year before.  In contrast to the 2016 event, which was a bitterly cold day with snow on the Mournes adding to the icy wind, this year the temperature was into double figures, with light winds and even outbreaks of sunshine.  It felt almost like a spring day rather than the second Sunday in January, the traditional date for the Cyclo-cross Championships.  … Read more
