Great Off Road Racing at Windmill Park

4It was a return to Windmill Park in Dungannon for Round 3 of the Ulster Cyclo-cross series and it was Island Wheelers second time hosting a CX race at this venue.

The event last year was held in January and was a very muddy course but the organisers took on board some feedback and produced a more flowing and fun course this time.

Applications for Championship Events Required

The 2014 Calendar application system is closing shortly and currently there are a  number of Provincial Championships and a National Championship for which no formal applications have been received.  I have listed the events below.

National Youth Championships 2014
It is Ulster's turn to host the National Youth Championships. This event takes place over the weekend of 23rd/24th August 2014 and includes a time trial, a criterium and a road race for U11, U12, U13, U14, U15, U16 for both boys and girls.

Cycling Ulster Junior and Under 16 Team Building Fun Day

As a reward for an excellent season for Cycling Ulster teams and riders Cycling Ulster will be running a team building and fun day on Sunday 10th November. The day will be based at Dundonald International Ice Bowl. Activities will include Ice Skating, Ten Pin Bowling, Laser Quest and Crazy Golf. The day will be a thank you to our young riders who have shown so much committment and dedication this year.

All juniors and under 16s are invited from all disciplines however for some activities there are restrictions on numbers so we need to know asap who wishes to go.… Read more

Events This Weekend – Leisure and CycloCross

2Ride with Fondriest - Saturday 19th  October
On Saturday morning there is a chance to have ride out with Maurizio Fondriest starting at So Cycle,  72 Main Street, Augher at 9.30am. The cycle will be going from the shop in Augher to Lusty Beg and Maurizio Fondriest will be joining the cycle. He is coming over to visit to So Cycle since the shop supplies a full range of Fondriest bikes.

Riders can stay over at Lusty Beg. There will be accommodation available in Lusty Beg so check out So Cycle on Facebook for more details.

Northern Ireland Gearing Up For Wheely Big Event

Giro #4Northern Ireland is gearing up for the biggest sporting event of 2014 with the Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB) expecting in excess of 140,000 overnight visitors for the start of next year’s Giro d’Italia cycle race.

The world’s second-biggest cycling race is expected to generate millions of pounds towards the island’s economy with Northern Ireland set to be the prime benefactor due to the fact that most of the racing will take place north of the border.

The Giro d’Italia will see more than 200 of the world’s best cyclists from over 30 countries arriving in Northern Ireland for what’s known as the Grande Partenza (Big Start) in Belfast on Friday May 9.… Read more

Special Guests Confirmed for CI Awards Night

Cycling Ireland’s Awards Night dinner will be held in the O’Callaghan Alexandra Hotel in Dublin, on the 2nd November 2013. This function is held annually to acknowledge the achievements of Irish cyclists. After what has been a tremendously successful year for cycling in Ireland, this year’s event will be attended by special guests Sean Kelly and Stephen Roche, who will join some of Ireland’s current top performers like Nicolas Roche and Dan Martin, in celebrating Irish cycling.

Following a prosecco reception guests will enjoy a 3 course meal, where they will get a chance to mingle with some of the premier cyclists in Ireland across all disciplines.… Read more

Strong Irish Team Named for European Championships

This weekend Apeldoorn hosts the 2013 Track Cycling European Championships, where Ireland has entered a strong three person team. The team includes Scratch Race World Champion Martyn Irvine, whose focus will be on the Omnium event, and the Points Race. Caroline Ryan and Eoin Mullen complete the team, which will be competing for three days on the Dutch track.

Irvine and Ryan begin their competition with the Points Race on Friday evening, followed by the two day Omnium event. The Omnium is an event whereby the riders are allocated points for their finishing position in six events, with the winner being the person with the fewest points.… Read more


Feedback from the Cycling Ulster AGM

The Cycling Ulster AGM took place at Quinn's Corner yesterday. It was a lengthy affair with a lot of debates and discussions. Perhaps for riders the fact that there is no £1 race levy for 2014 is good news and hopefully this will help keep down the cost of races. The leisure levy rate was discussed and amendment of raising the current 50p to £1 was discussed but voting was suspended until a further meeting is held. Tour of South Derry Continues to Impress

8The 2nd Sunday in October arrived as it has this past few years with the Carn Wheelers annual charity cycle for MacMillan Cancer SupportCarn Wheelers, a relativly new club to cycling has continued to push the boundaries and provide excellent events.

This year just over 160 cyclists had registered online however with the sun shining on a crisp october morning by the time 10 bells rang 552 cyclists were waiting to depart the grounds of O'Donovan Rossa football club and take on the 50 and 37mile routes that lay ahead.4

As always a small army of volunteers from MacMillan and Carn Wheelers were up at dawn to ensure a smooth registration and that everyone was fuelled with enough caffeine to get them to the fed station in Moneyneany!… Read more

Reminder – Cycling Ulster AGM Tomorrow

The Cycling Ulster AGM takes place tomorrow at Quinn's Corner Ballygawley. The meeting starts at 1.00pm and there will be  a light lunch served at the halfway stage.

All clubs are entitled to send delegates. Club delegates do not have not have to be members of the club committee. Every club is entitled to one delegate with an additional delegate for evey ten members thereafter up to a maximum of six delegates per club. A list of each club's entitlement is shown below.

A club may send more than its entitlement of delegates but only those signed in as delegates can vote.… Read more
