Great Day at Cyclocross in Falls Park

aVC Glendale pulled out all the stops on Sunday to provide a great day's racing for young and old. The cyclocross course included tarmacked areas, steps, and mucky hills which saw a few riders take a tumble. Glendale also managed to turn on the sunshine and it was like a summer's day with temperatures in the 20's. Race director, Brendan Doherty, was hard at work for weeks and spent all day Friday and Saturday in the park digging pits, putting steps in place and generally getting everything set up.… Read more

Congratulations to Ulster Riders Picked for Worlds

mt2Cycling Ireland has announced a team of twelve riders who will compete in the UCI 2016 Road World Championships in Doha, Qatar from the 10th – 16th October. Amongst those twelve are three Ulster riders. Matthew Teggart from Banbridge will compete in the U23 Road Race as part of the U23 squad.

Jake Gray and Xeno Young will be part of the Junior men squad. Gray will compete in the road race while Young will tackle both the road race and the time trial. All three riders have consistently proved themselves this year .… Read more

There are a number of leisure events taking place this weekend. They include the Granemore 65 on Saturday promoted by Cill Cluanna Wheelers. Billy Knowles RIP – Funeral Arrangements

The webteam of Ulster Cycling News are deeply saddened to hear of the death of Maryland Wheelers stalwart Billy Knowles. Billy was a member of Maryland for almost 70 years who raced competitively in his younger days and continued as a club official and valued volunteer for a lifetime.

A service celebrating his life will be held this Friday 9th September in Roselawn at 10-30 with refreshments afterwards.

A full appreciation will be published within the next few days.

Feast of Leisure Events This Weekend

This weekend sees a glut of leisure events on both Saturday and Sunday all around the province so there will an event to suit all levels of cyclists. On Saturday there is the start of the new Ballymena CRC promted Fun Tour Series and The Tour of the Orchard County promoted by Orchard CC.  On Sunday Clann Eireann promote their Charity Cycle, Tir Chonaill GAP have their Harvest Cycle and Drumquin CC promote the Hills above Drumquin Challenge. VC Iveagh will host their annual Iveagh 50 while Clones CC have their annual Sportie to offer.… Read more

25/08/2016 Ciclisport TT Series Round 6 – Woodgreen

aYoung Breaks Irish Junior Record at Woodgreen
Due to ongoing road works on the Glenshane Pass Carn Wheelers had to move their Ciclisport Glenshane Series to Woodgreen. Forty seven riders turned out and it proved to be a fast night. Marcus Christie of Asea Wheelworx recorded the fastest time equaling his previous best time set the previous week. The time of 18.16 is  a new record for a 10 set on Irish roads. Craig McAuley of Caldwell Cycles took second place with  18.23 while Newry's Sean Featherstone was third with a 19.33.… Read more

Gary Swenarton North Down RIP

garyIt is with deep sadness that we have learned of the death of another Ulster cyclist. Gary Swenarton of North Down passed away on Wednesday evening in hospital following an accident at home on Monday.  Gary was a well liked, popular member of North Down and the Peninsula Triathlon Club who always had time for a chat.

We send our deepest sympathy to his immediate family including his brother Paul Swenarton who is well known on the TT circuit. He will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of cycling with him.… Read more

RIP David Catherwood – Funeral Arrangements

DavidIt was with great sadness that we learned of the recent death of David Catherwood following a tragic accident. David was a member of the Cycle 4 Christ cycling club and we had the pleasure of meeting him when I went along to set up the club. David was a true gentleman and an avid cyclist. He was greatly affected by the deaths of the 84 people in Nice and went out and cycled exactly 84 miles in memory of those that died. He is sadly missed by all that knew him.… Read more

Mullan’s Strong Performances Recognised by Belgian Project

aDromara Cycling Club’s Nathan Mullan has been chosen to travel to Belgium for a four-week stint of highly competitive cycling thanks to the support of The Belgian Project, an Ulster based initiative coordinated by Dany Blondeel.
Mullan’s cycling career has gone from strength to strength since he took up the hobby in a more committed way just under five years ago. Quickly moving up the ranks, Nathan came into 2016 well on his way to qualification into the A1 class, a pair of podiums including a win confirming his promotion to the top class earlier this year.… Read more

Laverty Doing Well in Interclub League

Stuart Laverty (Ballymoney CC) maintained his fine form on Wednesday evening’s Northern Region Interclub League race in Dervock taking both intermediate sprints and the overall victory to assert his authority on the Verge Sport Sprint competition. The 30 mile race for cat 3, 4 and club riders took place on a flat but technical circuit in ideal conditions. The field of 45 riders stayed together with any attempts to breakaway quickly brought back. Laverty outpaced Nigel Bradley (Northwest CC) at both intermediate sprints and again crucially took the chequered flag out-sprinting a well organised Northwest lead out train at the line.… Read more
