Belfast City Council Sports Development Conference 2013

The eighth annual Belfast City Council Sports Development Conference will take place in the Holiday Inn, Belfast, on Wednesday 27 November 2013 at 6pm. The conference will focus on current themes in sports development and will provide a variety of information aimed at sports clubs, coaches and administrators. The Conference is entitled "Raise Your Game" and should be of interest to our clubs. Access Checks Need Updated

One of the frst requirements for those working with or intending to work with young riders under the age of 18 is that they are vetted through AccessNI.

Cycling Ulster is the registered umbrella organisation for all of our Ulster clubs and as such we can can get our volunteers vetted through AccessNI free of charge. The process is simple and the check will last for three years.

I would ask all club secretaries and Safeguarding Officers to check the current list of vetted leaders (see below) as many of their club members now need to have their checks renewed.… Read more

MudFest for Ormeau Cross Race

1Up until 8am on Sunday 17 November 2013, Ormeau Park was a dry and fast flowing cyclo-cross course.  By 9am, as the host club Xmtb McConvey Cycles were still setting up, the rain came on.  The dry course soon became a very different course, with surface mud, deep mud, exposed roots and expanding water features.  This was Round 6 of the Ulster Cyclo-cross series and only the second wet race (Windmill Park in Dungannon was the other one).

Pre-registrations were high but with the turn in the weather it was difficult to predict how many would turn up, but they did, with approximately 240 taking part, just over 100 in the youth categories.  … Read more


Cycling Ulster Club of the Year 2013 – Nominations Sought

Cycling Ulster is seeking nominations for the Club of the Year 2013. Our clubs are the backbone of the organisation and the work that they do in promoting the sport of cycling in all areas is invaluable. Omagh Wheelers were nominated by Cycling Ulster for the overall National Club of the Year but the Ulster Club awards are nominated by club secretaries.

Youth Development Workshop 30th November

An exploratory workshop into the development and  progression of youth cycling in Ulster will take place in the House of Sport, Upper Malone Road, Belfast, BT9 5LA  on Saturday 30 November between 11.00am and 3.00pm.
The rooms will be available from 10am if you wish to arrive a bit earlier but all participants should aim to arrive from 10.45am so that a prompt start can be made. The invitation is open to all Cycling Ulster Clubs and members whether they are currently involved in Youth Cycling or not.… Read more

Small Grants Available for Volunteering Opportunites

We have received information regarding small grants for those clubs amd societies offering volunteering opportunities. We feel that many cycling clubs would be ideal vehicles to deliver volunteering opportunities and should consider applying for one of these grants. The closing deadline for this year is 29th November so please see below for more details.

The Association of Independent Volunteer Centres has been awarded the contract to deliver the NI Small Grants programme on behalf of the DSD as part of NI's first ever Volunteering Strategy "Join in, get involved:build a better future"

Round 6 Ulster Cyclocross Series Sunday 17th November

1Round Six of the Ulster Cyclocross Season will take place on Sunday 17th November in Ormeau Park, Belfast hosted by XMTB/McConvey Cycles. Xmtb McConvey Cycles is grateful to Belfast City Council for the use of Ormeau Park for their cyclo-cross race.

The course is completely different to previous years and has been made more suitable for cross bikes.  The start/finish area has been moved down beside the football pitches.  From the start, the riders will loop up onto the grass along the top of the course before a flowing wooded section leading to a fast run along a gravel path then a short, technical climb that will probably have to be ran up.  … Read more


Courses for Club Leaders

Sport Northern Ireland will launch a programme entitled 'Club Leaders' in January 2014 which will be designed to support clubs to develop business skills in their volunteers.  The programme will include a web-resource, e-learning, seminars and a limited amount of mentoring opportunities.  Each of these channels of support will be targeted a sports club management, committee members and administrators.

Apollo Host Sports Nutrition Talks

Apollo’s new club rooms based in Lurgan town centre, was the place to be on Sunday to learn about Performance Nutrition. The seminar was well attended by Apollo members as well as some top local triathletes. The talk was given by Michael Mullin, Sports Nutritionist. Michael is a graduate of Sports Science before going on to complete his Masters in Sports Nutrition at Chester University.

The talk was tailored to help all levels of cyclist and focused on pre and during fuelling / as well as food and supplements for recovery; different types and needs of fuelling was discussed to needs of lengths of events from Time Trials to road races club and open, as well as sportives.… Read more

Omagh Wheelers Youth Training Day

On Saturday 16th November, Omagh wheelers cycling club are hosting a youth training event. The training event caters for all cyclists aged between 13-16 years old. Based at youth sport Omagh, the training consists of being assessed on the track before being separated into groups for a structured road session. Experienced cyclists from Omagh wheelers and further field will be on hand to ensure safety for all cyclists. They will also be able to provide help and advice through out the day.
