Safeguarding Course Warrenpoint Monday 10th

Cycling Ulster will be a running a Safeguarding course on Monday 10th March in the Whistledown Hotel in Warrenpoint on Monday 10th March. The course wil be taken by Ptrick McAleavey and Marian Lamb.

The course has been requested by Newry Wheelers but is open to other local clubs. Designated Safeguarding Officers must do this course before doing the Designated Officer's Course. However the course is not just for Safeguarding Officers. It is about putting into practice, policies and procedures to not only safeguard the young people in our sport but also all our clubs and volunteers.… Read more

Calendar Issues

Youth Races in the Handbook
The details of all the youth races across the varies categories U12, U14, U16 were not transferred across to the generic ‘Youth’ listing on the yearbook. This mistake was not picked up at the time and Cycling Ireland apologises for any inconvenience that this has caused in planning events for young riders.

These events have been recorded on the online event system. Cycling Ireland will be able to display these events separately via a dedicated youth calendar which will be available via the Cycling Ireland website early next week.… Read more

XMTB Continue Development Plans

aFollowing on from the success of last year, the XMTB McConvey Cycles team has now been able to step up a level. A newly formed development team will act as a feeder for the established race team. The development team will provide support to U14 and U16 riders, these riders will then be able to progress to the race team when they enter the junior ranks.

The race team will be targeting British MTB series, commonwealth games selection, Irish NPS along with the Ulster league. Team manager, Lance McCarthy expressed his delight at the team’s performance, “I was pleased with the team’s performance last year, we achieved medals in the Irish and Ulster championships along with several high quality performances which we hope to build on in 2014.… Read more

Danny Boy Races Now Open for Entry

The Danny Boy races promoted by Roe Valley CC are now open for entry on Entry Central. Roe Valley will be promoting three races on Sunday 16th March. These will include separate races for A3 and A4 riders as well as a Women's and Master's event.

The Race headquarters will be St Mary's Banagher Gaelic Football Ground in Feeny, County Derry. The course is the usual Dany Boy circuit of Feeny - Park - Feeny a distance of twelve miles.  Both the A3's and A4's will complete four laps while the women and Masters will cover twenty four miles in total.… Read more

Off-road racing at Kilbroney this weekend

rostrevor_mtb_festival_2014_logo_120 Kilbroney Park will again be a hive of activity this weekend, 9th March, for the Rostrevor Mountain Bike Festival. Dromara CC and ChainReaction Cycle Club have joined together for the second year of this festival. Dromara CC is hosting Round 1 of the 2014 Ulster XC series (cross-country race - XC) and CRC is hosting Round 1 of the IDMS series (downhill - DH). … Read more

Fast Racing at John Haldane Memorial

aNewry Wheelers catered for all Senior categories today when they promoted the John Haldane Memorial on the Newry to Warrentpoint Dual Carriageway. First into the fray were the A1's and A2's with the A2's getting a short handicap over scratch. This race went from the gun and even the strong headwind did little to slow down the determined riders. With six laps of the nine mile circuit to complete a number of riders were determined to be make their mark early on.

Gary Cranston of East Antrim Audi showed no sign of tiredness following his terrific ride yesterday in the Spires GP as he was one of the first riders to bridge the gap to the A2's.

Ards CC Recognise their World Champion

aLast night Ards CC put on an evening to recognise and celebrate the achievements of one of their former members,Martyn Irvine. The attendees were welcomed by Desi McIlrath, Chairman of Ards CC before Billy Kirk came on stage to give some background information about the evening.

He talked about beating Martyn when he did his first time trial as a young 18 year old . But as Martyn persevered with the cycling Billy recognised from an early stage that this was someone special.

Safeguarding Courses Well Received

aThe latest Safeuarding Awareness Courses run and  organised by Cycling Ulster were well received. Last Thursday the course tutors, Patrick McAleavey and Marian Lamb headed to Dromore in County Tyrone to deliver the course to Vision 24-7. Members of Island Wheelers and Drumquin CC were also in attendance.

While the numbers participating at this course was not as high as in Randalstown the venue could not have been better. We are indebted to Johnathan Keyes, Manager of the EuroAuctions facility in Dromore for the use of the premises.… Read more

Ards CC Celebrate Martyn Irvine This Friday

There are very few clubs in Ireland who can boast of producing a world champion at elite level but Ards CC in County Down can certainly lay claim to that honour. It is now approaching the first anniversary of Martyn Irvine’s spectacular victory in the Scratch event at the World Track Championships held in Minsk, Belarus.  Irvine achieved this win just one hour after winning a silver medal in the individual pursuit discipline.

To mark the occasion Ards CC are hosting a social evening in the Web Theatre at 49 North Street, Newtownards this Friday evening (28th February) during which the videos of Martyn’s superb performances will be shown on the big screen.… Read more

Reminder – Safeguarding Course Tonight – Monaghan

Cycling Ulster is running a Safeguarding Awareness Course (Child Protection) tonight, Monday 24th February,  in the Four Seasons Hotel in Monaghan

The course  begins at 7.30pm and lasts approximately three hours with a break at the halfway stage. The course will be delivered by Patrick McAleavey and Marian Lamb who are trained SportNI/NSPCC Tutors..

All club Safeguarding Officers must complete this course before going on to do the Designated Officer Course which is normally delivered by the Local Authorities through SportNI.

All those clubs involved in the development of youth cycling need to ensure that all their Youth Leaders and coaches attend this course.… Read more
