aAttack, Attack, Attack was the watchword of today’s sixty mile stage of Rás Dhun na nGall.With ten riders less than a minute off  ‘Yellow’  and category  prizes such Young Rider and King of the Mountains being hotly contested there was everything to play for today.

Feely Retains Yellow Ahead of Final Stage in Ardara

aaaThere was no evidence of tired legs following the hilly Time Trial this morning when Stage Three of the 2014 Edition of Rás Dhún na nGall got underway this afternoon. All those who had been champing at the bit on the neutralised zone sprung to life when the words, "Race On Race On" were uttered.

Almost inmmediately the attacks began and the pace increased making it very difficult for some riders who were trying to make their way back into the bunch following early mechanicals.

Great XC Event in Lady Dixon Park

Lady Dixon Park in Belfast was the venue for third round of the 2014 Irish National Point Series (NPS) which took place on Sunday 25 May.  This round also doubled up as Round 3 of the Ulster Cross-country mountain bike series and was hosted by local club Xmtb McConvey Cycles.  This venue has known some great racing over the last 5 years and normally the riders would be enjoying dry dusty and fast trails around the beautiful park which is managed by Belfast City Council.  This year however the skies were overcast and the threat of rain was in the air.  … Read more


Pantani – The Legend Lives On

slaneAThe Giro d’Italia has come and gone but it has left a host of memories for the thousands of cycling fans who witnessed its historic visit to our shores. This year's edition of the race will produce its own heroes and villains but on a recent visit to Slane Cycles on the Andersonstown Road in Belfast I was poignantly reminded of one of my own heroes of our sport.

On a stand on the counter was the Bianchi used by Marco Pantani in 1998 when he won both the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France….the last person ever to achieve that historic double.… Read more

Commonwealth Games Update

As we move into the final week for riders to reach the nomination standard to be considered for a place on the Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games team I'd like to thank everyone for all their cooperation over the last year and a half.

In the last few weeks three more riders have met the standard. Colin Davenport met the kilometre time on the track, as did James Brown with pilot Dave Readle and Fraser Duncan has also joined the list.

Attention – Cycling Ireland Require Coaches for New Programme

Cycling Ireland is presently in the early stages of launching a Brand New Programme called Bike for Life, sponsored by the HSE and ISC Women in Sport.  We are seeking qualified coaches (minimum foundation coach) with an interest in engaging and running the programme to attend this New course.

The course is a one day course with both theory and practical based elements.  However, greater emphasis will be placed on the practical aspect of this course and will include some bike riding. … Read more

RIP William ‘Bill’ Lewis

It is with regret that Cycling Ulster has learned of the death on Saturday of William Lewis, better known as Bill Lewis. Bill was Captain for many years of the old Windsor Cycling Club and one of the trustees of the club when it folded.

Bill was an avid cyclist and was still riding his bike at the age of ninety one only two years ago.

His funeral will take place on Thursday at 11.00am in St Mary's Church of Ireland on the Crumlin Rd in Belfast.… Read more

Tour Na Gaelteachta will take place on Sunday the 18th May 2014,starting venue will be PCC Secondary school in Falcarragh with cyclists signing on(€15) from 9am and the tour starting at 10am. Hosted by Errigal Cycling Club with the pace controlled at a leisure pace and there will be a tea stop at Dore. Giro Fever Continues

aThe Grand Partenza of the 2014 Giro d'Italia has its prelude tomorrow evening in Belfast City Centre when the twenty two teams involved in the second biggest stage race in the world are presented to the public.

There were unprecedented queues both at the Belfast Welcome Centre and on line when the free tickets were made available and many people were inevitably left disappointed.

However nothing daunted when the teams arrived in Belfast on Tuesday and Wednesday the ineveitable jungle drums quickly relayed the message. Crowds flocked to Belfast hotels looking for the contenders in this year's event.… Read more
