Milk it for all it’s Worth – Sports Nutrition Seminar

The Dairy Council for Northern Ireland invites you to attend a sports nutrition seminar on the evening of Wednesday 29th October at The MAC, Belfast.

Olympic rowing champion Anna Watkins and Lead Nutritionist to the GB Rowing Team Wendy Martinson will share their practical sports nutrition insights, including from the London 2012 Olympics.

Prof Kevin Tipton from the University of Stirling will also present an update on post-exercise recovery strategies including the potential role of milk.

The seminar will be chaired by Dr Sharon Madigan, Head of Performance Nutrition at the Irish Institute of Sport.… Read more

‘GET COACHING’ Coaches Workshops – Developing the Young Performer

Cycling Ireland is running a series of 'GET COACHING' Coaches Workshop - Developing the Young Performer in each province in October and November.

Coaches will explore and gain an understanding of the needs of riders of different ages and abilities in cycling. What can we as coaches do to best develop our youth so that they develop to their best potential, enjoy and ultimately sustain their involvement in cycle sport well into their adult years?

These interactive workshop will explore this subject, we will look at areas such as skills development, skills development through games and activities, planning and developing realistic coaching programmes and so much more...

Cavan Clubs Celebrate Successful Year

aThere was a great sense of camaraderie and 'bonhomie' in the Cavan Rugby Club at Smellon Park on Friday night when the five Cavan cycling teams came together to celebrate the end of their first inter club league.

Six years ago we lamented the fact that Cavan was the only Ulster county without a cycling club.

A year later, when the Cycling Ireland AGM was held in Cavan, it was a contingent from the newly formed Breffni Wheelers which lead participants out on an early morning ride.… Read more

Coping with Cycle Training and School Work for Female Cyclists

The Training Day has been organised by the Irish Women's Commission and the goal for the taining day is to give girls the tools they need  to allow them to continue with their bike riding while studying for their leaving Certs/GCSE's/A Levels and still gain good exam results.

The Programme for the day will be a morning Ride with National Champion Fiona Meade and Junior Women's Coach Orla Hendron along with other Coaches from the Women's Commission. This will be followed by lunch in the Green isle Hotel.… Read more

Ulster Cyclo-cross series 2014 launches this Sunday

Round 1 of the 2014 Ulster cyclo-cross series begins this weekend at Lurgan Park hosted by Apollo CT. The park has had a long tradition of cross races and is in great condition after the recent dry spell. As well as the cyclo-cross races for men and women there will be the full range of support races for those on mountain bikes for all age groups starting with the Under 6s. This season we have the ChainReaction Cycles Store on board as the overall series sponsor and will be involved in delivering an 'event package' to various rounds.… Read more

The Off road Commission Chair, Martin Grimley, ably assisted by Lisa Millar of the Ulster Women's Association gave an excellent training day on Sunday to help provide new comers with some of the skills of cyclocross.

Ulster Youths Impress in UK Inter-regionals.

aDay two of the UK inter-regional youth road championships saw highs and lows for the 8-strong Ulster squad who experienced a podium finish but also a couple of painful crashes.

First up was the street sprint events; a highbrid event combining track-like skills in a road setting. The first run is a timed run over the 250m course to determine the seeding with Ciara Doogan again excelling to record the 3rd fastest time with club mate 'pocket rocket' Shauna McFadden posting 10th quickest time.

Roisin Carter also made it in to the top 15 with pre-event favourite Shenna McKiverigan unfortunately crashing out in her effort to record the fastest time.… Read more

2015 Calendar Applications Close on Tuesday

The closing date for the receipt of applications of events for 2015 is Tuesday 30th September. We have been informed that a fine of €200 is applicable for any events entered after that date. If any club is having difficulty accessing or registering their events for 2015 please contact me at marianlamb@ulstercyclingnews.com. Currently there are less than half of the usual events added to the online system.

Silver for Mullen in the Men’s U23 World’s Time Trial

ryanRyan Mullen has won a silver medal in the Men's U23 Time Trial at the UCI Road World Championships in Ponferrada, Spain today. In extremely wet conditions the Irish man took control of the race from the start, posting the fastest time at each time check along the route. With three riders to go, it looked like Ireland would secure the gold, until a fast finishing Campbell Flakemore (Aus) narrowly pipped Mullen, to take the World Title. Flakemore took gold, Mullen silver, and Stefan Keung (SUI) won the bronze medal.… Read more

Cycling Ireland Strategy and AGM

It will be interesting to read the final presentation from W2 Consulting, the firm charged by Cycling Ireland to gather information from the membership on how it feels Cycling Ireland should proceed in the next five years.

Following an initial survey in which over 6000 members participated the second stage involved meetings in each Province. All members were contacted via Cycling Ireland's Ezine and those who had participated in the survey also received an email regarding the venue.

The Ulster meeting took place last Tuesday night in the Ramada Hotel at Shaw's Bridge.… Read more
