Free Bike Register at Bellaghy

This Friday evening Church Island Cycling Club have organised an evening where cyclists can register their bikes for free on the Bike Register system. The Bellaghy based club have been working closely with the local Policing and Community Safety Partnership group who are facilitating the free register scheme.
The registration will take place at The Old Schoolhouse, Bellaghy between 6pm and 9pm on Friday 3rd April. It is open to all Church Island CC members and to all Cycling Ireland members from the Mid Ulster region.… Read more

Two Bronze Medals For ParaCycling Team

The female tandem of Katie-George Dunlevy and Eve McCrystal  won bronze in the Women's B 3km Individual Pursuit at the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in Apeldoorn, Netherlands today. In the ride-off for bronze their time of 3.39.549 was faster than GB's time of 3.39.650 by .101 second after an exciting race which saw Ireland pull ahead in the closing metres. New Zealand took the gold medal with silver going to Japan. This adds to the bronze medal won by Eoghan Clifford yesterday in the Men's C3 Pursuit, and Colin Lynch's fine fourth place position.

Cyclists Need to be Aware of Horse Riders

aI have received a special plea from local horse riders to make cyclists  aware when approaching horses being exercised on the roads.

This applies particularly when approaching horse riders from the rear. Bicycles frequently startle horses when coming from the rear due to their silent approach.

There have been a few unfortunate encounters recently when a cyclist coming up from behind has startled horses causing animals to bolt along the road or rear up.

While most cyclist nowadays do not have bells fitted to their bikes, except perhaps when using the tow path, they should still make their presence known to the horse riders in front of them.

Notification of Cancelled North Pole Events

We have received communication from the new committee of North Pole CC regarding some of the events which are in the 2015 calendar to be promoted by the club.

The new committee has decided that North Pole CC WILL NOT promote a number of the competitive events currently in the handbook in the interests of health and safety. The events which have been cancelled are as follows.

4th May 2015 - J.G Memorial - Venue Logues Bar, Cranford.
28th May 2015 - Donegal TT Championship  - Venue Burt
31st May 2015 - Donegal Road Race - Venue Drumfries

CI Board Update and Commissaire Warnings

Clarification on the use of video recording devices in Road Races

Cycling Ireland have become aware of the recent increased use of video recording devices within the Road Racing Peloton and wish to clarify the following:

Cycling Irelands Equipment Regulations are in conjunction with UCI Equipment Regulations where Article 1.3.004 states:

“Except in mountain bike racing, no technical innovation regarding anything used, worn or carried by any rider or license holder during a competition (bicycles, equipment mounted on them, accessories, helmets, clothing, means of communication, etc.) may be used until approved by the UCI. Read more

Ulster Team For Scottish Youth Tour Announced

aThe Cycling Ulster Youth Academy has announced its team for the Youth Tour of Scotland which takes place in Perth at Easter.

There were two selection events held in recent weeks to help decide the team. These were  a road race which was part of the North West Youth League organised by Errigal CC, Donegal Bay and Omagh Wheelers and a time trial on St Patrick's Day organised by Maryland Wheelers and the David McCall Foundation.

A large number of riders travelled to Dore in Co Donegal to participate in the races.… Read more

Ballymena CRC will be promoting the classic League event theWallace Caldwell this coming Saturday. Riders and supporters are asked to note that there is a change to the finisishe. Reminder – SportNI Cycling Grant Workshop Tonight

As part of a 3 year Giro D’Italia legacy, to build on the great work which has already happened and to support further development within cycling, Sport Northern Ireland through Active Awards for Sport are seeking applications for Cycling specific projects. This will run along-side the main Active Awards for Sport application process which will be open to all eligible groups as in previous rounds.

Attention All Ulster Juniors – Training Weekend Donegal

aaTommy Lamb, who has been acting as head of the Road Commission is pleased to announce that Jason McHugh of Four Masters has come forward and is interested in taking the lead role in the Road Commission. He said, "I am delighted that Jason has taken on this role. Jason is a well known cyclist with many podium positions to his name., He has  been instrumental in recent years in working with the Donegal Development Squad and is used to working with young riders."

Jason has already been working behind the scenes and has planned a Junior Training and Teambuilding Camp which will take place over the weekend of the 10th - 12th April.… Read more

Let’s Share Rural Roads

aCycling and walking charity, Sustrans has teamed up with the Ulster Farmer’s Union (UFU) to promote sharing road space safely in rural areas. Cycling Ulster which promotes cycling in all its forms was approached by Sustrans to become involved and were only too happy to do so. Today Tommy and Marian Lamb met up with the Sustrans Team and Baillie Thompson of the Ulster Farmers' Union.
