Ulster Grabs Two More All Ireland Titles

4In what can only be described as an exciting finish, Ethan Downey of Clann Eireann claimed the Junior National Champions Title yesterday. A large field of juniors took to the roads around Tobermore for the National Junior Road Race Championships and it was gloves off from the outset.  A small group broke away initially powered by East Tyrone's Harvey Barnes and they opened a significant gap on the main field in the first lap.

Soon they were joined by other big hitters forming an eleven man break which looked as f they were away for the day.… Read more

Hargan Powers to All Ireland Victory

aSean Hargan of Phoenix CC proved he was no mean tester when he lifted the National Title today in the M60 class. The Masters and Junior All Ireland Championships was promoted by Carn Wheelers this weekend. The South Derry club had planned a tough technical course for the participants and this coupled with high winds and rain made the going tough. However Sean Hargan is made of stern stuff and he put his head down to lift the title. Silver medal went to Cuculainn's Jimmy Flynn while another Ulsterman, Dominic Drumm of Bann Wheelers took Bronze.… Read more

Billy Smyth (Time Lord) Launches Book Tonight

Phoenix CC stalwart, Billy Smyth has written a book collating  anecdotes from his long cycling career with Phoenix CC.  Is entitled Befor Lycra. Billy is not only an active Phoenix club member but for many years was dubbed the Time Lord because of his long association with the Ulster Veteran's and later the Dave Kane Time Trial Series. The launch of his book of short stories will take place on tonight 8th September in the Malone Suite of the Beechlawn Hotel, Dunmurry from 7pm to 11pm.… Read more

Brian Kinning Cyclo Cross Race Friday Night 25th August

This Friday the long awaited Kinning Cyclocross event at Orangefield will be dedicated to the late Brian Kinning who passed away recently. This event will be the opener for the cyclocross season and it is on a very fast course which takes in part of Orangefield outdoor track.

There will be racing for  Under 12 and 14's who will ride the full course along with women in the first race of the evening. Race 2 will be for B race men with gridding determined by order of entry so get your entries in quickly.… Read more

Cycle for Cancer Awareness

2Mary and Raymond McCartan from Square Wheels along with a grup of friends plan to cycle a toltal of over 550 miles around the coast of Ulster to raise awareness of ovarian cancer. On the 1st July  they will cycle from the Moy to Bangor, a route of approximately 130 miles via Newry and the coast road - Strangford, Portaferry and up east coast to Bangor. The second part of the cycle will be of the north coast on Monday 10th July starting in Larne following the coast line to Magilligan taking in the infamous Torr Head along the way. … Read more

Street Velodrome in Antrim All Weekend

The pop up style street velodrome is in Antrim, Central Car Park, Castle Mall, for three days offering cyclists and non-cyclists the chance to get on their bikes!  Bikes, helmets coaching and all equipment is provided free of charge so come along and join in.  Family fun skills training including bike checks and taster sessions linked to Antrim and Newtownabbey council programmes will also be on offer.… Read more

Final Pics and Roundup of Rás Dhun na nGall

aaThe 27th Rás Dhun na nGall ended on a high note this evening when the race produced its first Donegal winner in the form of 16 year old Conor Halvey from Donegal. Halvey kept a cool head throughout the weekend and never lost sight of the overall goal. He used his knowledge of the roads that he had trained on so often to save his strength when possible and drive on when needed. I think we will be seeing a lot more from this young man.… Read more

Halvey Delights Home Crowds to Take Final Yellow in Donegal

aThe final stage of Rás Dhun na nGall 2017 produced a Donegal winner for the first tine in its twenty seven year history. The sixty two mile stage took the riders through several loops around Ardara, Glenties and Portnoo before the ascent of Glengesh where the race finished.

With many riders only 34 seconds off the Yellow jerssy attacks came quickly as those in contention tried to make their mark and break the stronghold of the NRPT outfit which had dominated the race so far. Coming to the top of the first KoH at the Nick, Dillon Corkery (NRPT) was out on his own followed closely by Adam Ward (AAA) while the peloton, led by Calvin Moore (Caldwell Cycles) and Conor Gallagher (Castlebar CC) put down the hammer and gave chase.… Read more

Moore Takes TT Stage but Halvey in Yellow

aCalvin Moore of Caldwell Cycles had the legs today to see him take victory in Stage two of Rás Dhun nan Gall. This was a time trial stage of 24 miles taking riders on the road from Ardara to Killybegs and finishing on the top of the climb of the Nick. For many of the early riders, not only did they have to contend with the steepness of the climb, but also torrential rain. Calvin made it look easy though and took the stage with a time of 08’17.05” just two seconds faster that second placed rider Dillon Corkery of NRPT.… Read more
